Dummied FF4 Feature
« on: December 06, 2007, 05:52:17 PM »
Does everyone remember how FF1, FF2, and FF3 gave you the option to change the battle speed on the load screen? Seems they had the same plan for FF4 but scrapped it, the string is still in with the menu's text, was translated for FF2us, and can be enabled by changing a single byte:

I doubt there's any code remaining to actually get it working and there's no window for it, but I thought it was pretty cool.

For comparison, FF3's save menu:

I always wondered why that text was there.  That is a good find.  Maybe we can get it working?

That does seem nice, yet kinda redundant though...

Here's another one:

This is supposed to be used when you call the fat chocobo with a whistle. I forget if this was actually used in FF4 SFC or not, I know it was used in the GBA version. Unfortunately it doesn't work correctly, enabling this replaces the string regardless of how you call the chocobo.

If I go by the J2e translation, the answer is no.

I just checked an unmodified Japanese copy and it's not used there either.

interesting, there is so much research on FF6 but not as much on FF4 (at least that I have seen) so this is cool.

Does anyone else here like FF5? I really like it and it'd be cool to go digging in that one too sometime.

I like FF5, but that has been documented to the death (not in terms of romhacking though, although that could just be my perception). Check out Gamefaqs FF5 Algo doc, and it clarifies pretty much everything and also applies against FF5A (except the FF5A specific stuff). It is missing one thing AFAIK, but that involves immunity+elemental physical/elemental attack.

The research for FF4 is not as documented.. although you would think it is (Ben Siron's FF2 algo doc is still incomplete).

This is why I spend some time asking said questions about the game.. since it is known by the romhackers, but just simply not documented.

It seems to me here though that there were "incomplete" features of this game (not surprising though) and arguably FF4A's "character select" feature was supposed to be implemented in the original game (which I agree with, given how the equipment data was set up).

Then again, it is worth pointing out JCE's gripe with this game that it is craptacular codewise.

It is, think of it as half FF4 and half FF6...with a bit of lunacy added.

which makes it all the more difficult, which is intriguing :)

I'll check out that doc though, thanks, I didn't mean to knock on FF4 research, it just feels like the research is mostly on FF6, and often FF4, which isn't a bad thing, but I really like the job system and multiple worlds of FF5.

anywho, thanks for the advise guys.

Was the Active/Wait stuff removed from FF2/4ET or just hidden? That would be a nice hack to put in IMO.

The option is still in the menu in Easy Type, for FF2us you'd need to reprogram the menu to allow access to it. A competent assembly hacker could probably do it in five minutes, unfortunately I'm anything but competent when it comes to assembly.

As said in a different thread... the Big Chocobo has two different statements it makes when you summon it via the Whistle. The message depends on the status of the Save menu command as far as I can tell. If you could repost the picture and/or message, it would be appreciated.

Active mode, which is edited out of the FF2US menu is still usable when transferring SRAM from FF4 (probably including FF4ET) to FF2.

A hack for this would certainly be cool (or at least an app to toggle it within the SRAM would be nice too)...

Edit: Never mind, I made this rant before... heh
