Title: FFIV Dev photos and The Cutting Room Floor
Post by: jojo80 on July 24, 2016, 02:10:42 PM
Howdy all, I just registered to share these photos from the 3 Volume Final Fantasy 25th Memorial Ultimania.
There are a few pages of FFIV dev documents, In my fragmented japanese I didn't notice any deviations from the release exception listing FuSoYa as a 'Super Mage' (ChouMadouShi) rather than 'Person of the Moon/Lunarian.' (No listing of Anna as a playable character.... I looked!)
There were 3 photos of planning sheets, the most noteworthy being a early 'Cecil / Kain / or Golbez' portrait and a different adult Rydia portrait:

The name for all portraits is roughly 'Zariganeel' - I don't know the significance of the name.

The other 2 photos are the shop screen and button config screen:

By the way, There is a great FF4 page on the cutting room floor - if you want to share your knowledge, add to it!

Woah, thanks for sharing this! I always enjoy finding out new tidbits about FFIV.

I like the name Zariganeel, sounds like some badass main villain or endgame boss. Hey, maybe it was an early naming for Zeemis/Zermous or something Like Zarigan/Zariganeel.  :hmm:

And now that the pic is fully loaded on me caveman internets.... I really dig how have the timer originally would've went past 100 hours. The alternate A.Rydia portrait and Cecil/Kain/Golbez portrait looks cool too! Judging from the pose it's facing it looks mostly like DK Cecil.

Next time I have free time I'll see about pixeling them in and posting patches in case people want to see those 2 portraits in-game. Any other early portraits/graphics amongst the info in that book?

Sadly there is no more FFIV unreleased pixel art, but a few pencil sketches of the battle characters / summons.
In the FF7 section there is one single amazing pic of FFVII as a (16bit) game. It think this is right after FF6 and during the time the FF7 team had to pause and work on chrono trigger - placeholder Locke in the screen like the SGI demo:

The "job" name is Ankoku Kishi (Dark Knight) so I would wager that the name might have been an early development name for who we now know as Cecil. OR it could have been the dev name of a different playable character and it was chosen for being (tied for?) the longest to make sure the spacing of the text and windows looked ok. The "all zeros" look like they're there as placeholders for spacing as well.

The portrait definitely shares elements with what we're familiar with for DK Cecil's portrait, but also with Kain's portrait. I wonder if they were both originally based off a single character?

The top left says "New Game" and the box below it has "Save 1" through "Save 4", also the box at the bottom says "Is this data ok? Yes/No", so I think this is the "load game" screen (the one immediately after the title screen).

Second picture (the shop) looks pretty much exactly like what was in the final product. It's completely populated with 0 Gil Crystal Shields though LOL.

Third picture looks like there were going to be four options to choose among for button layout. The first one is (mostly) what we're used to. A is confirm, B is cancel, X is menu, Y is "all cancel"?? The others are stepwise counter-clockwise rotations of that configuration.

Re: FF7 SNES -- I wouldn't be surprised if they were going to originally attempt to release FF7 for the SNES-CD / Nintendo Playstation.

I just noticed how the character portraits are spaced out more. From the looks of it, if someone wanted just a four person party they could have to rows of space between portraits instead of one with this setup and be good to go! In theory a person could also use 5x5 sized portraits instead of the 4x4 seen here as well if going that route.

Woah, cool stuff jojo80!

It will be interesting to see this version of FF7 ... Pretty much Chrono Trigger art :D
Was there a demo ever released/leaked out of that version?

I love stuff like this! :childish:

May I ask a question?
Is there some info on the (non-3D) mobile phone remake, like pixel art (menu portraits, battle sprites)? It it SO hard to get any info on that on the net! :lame:

They ported the non-3d version to phones as well!? Wow. Is it the same as PSP FF4 Complete version?

No, it uses the same engine (I assume) as the original mobile After Years. It's based mostly on the GBA graphics, but it has new battle and overworld sprites.
