regarding my Opera 6 difficulties:

- the slow downloading can occur on something as simple as a Google Images search results page, and there's no Flash there.  i don't even think Flash is enabled/installed in my browser anyway.
- no, nothing like 400-500MB cache.  my max browser cache settings is probably something like 50 MB, double digits.  and the cache isn't being burdened, because the problem will happen even when i just have one fresh browser window open, and am visiting my first or second webpage.

I might be one of few Mac users here, but I just switched to using Chome from Safari and Firefox before that. Overall, I'm pretty impressed, though I'm using the latest beta version and there are a few rough edges. It is amazingly quick compared to the other browsers, and I really like the fact that each tab is run in a seperate process. Creating and closing tabs has a very direct and immediate effect on the available system memory, which for someone who is usually pushing the limits of his computer is a very nice thing. The interface is very crisp and minimalistic -- they use tabs ala beta versions of safari 4 where the tabs are part of the title bar of the window which I always liked. Dragging tabs is nice, you can create new windows and they have a slick visual trick of showing a "preview" window as you drag. I slightly prefer the way Safari 4 works though, with its little preview boxes.

From a web development perspective, its just about the same as Safari 4, using the exact same debugging interface. I have noticed a few bugs in it that I didn't see in Safari however. They also haven't fixed the inability to inspect an element inside an iframe.

Overall, its a very fast and stable browser that I'll probably continue to use everyday. Except when I have to test things in IE7. Ugh. :)

It seemed like almost yesterday that Chrome was updated. It's updated again today, to Chrome 6!

Then again, they keep bleeping updating!  :wtf:

Chrome 8 is out today.

The key feature IMO is the PDF reading support that is built into the browser. This is a vast improvement than the Adobe plugin of fail.. which consistently was slow, unstable, and made the browser very crash prone... at least the last time I recall using it.

Oh, I need to get the new Chrome.  I love it and I'm glad I converted over from Opera.

The Adobe plugin does that no matter what browser you use. Sadly, the Foxit plugin does the exact same fucking thing.

My solution for the past several years has been to configure Firefox to open PDFs externally rather than using the plugin.  You basically disable the plugin in FF, then go to Options->Applications and set it to "Use Adobe Reader" everywhere it says "Use Adobe Plugin".  The plugin is pretty much guaranteed to crash your browser, but the standalone app seems to work just fine.  Even if it did crash, it wouldn't take FF down with it. :)

That's what I did after I got fed up with Foxit's plugin.

Chrome is my #1 Flash browser... but not my primary one (like the downloading tab is meh @ best visually).

I've always just downloaded the PDF file and opened it afterwards.... and didn't like doing that when I don't want the PDF most of the time (sometimes it's just a readme for what I'm looking at). Having this option in Chrome is AWESOME. It's the equivalent of google's web version of the PDF, but insanely fast and stable and should work "just anywhere".

So back to... FUCK YOU ADOBE.

 :edit:
I think the plugin interfaces with the browser in a limited way, thus giving you fail. Firefox's graphics/rendering is rather sensitive (especially when Flash is used) and implodes on itself rather easily. I'm not sure what browsers you have tested the Adobe/Foxit plugin on though.

This is starting to turn into the browser thread....

Anyways, Firefox 4 was out two days ago... I'm running it briefly at the moment.. and it's doing OK for now. It seems a tad more responsible so far.

Too bad Firefox seems to be late to the new browser version party... maybe it'll work out.

 :edit:
While you may be at downloading+installing a new browser... it's a good idea to update Flash... like again.

Chrome 12 has been out for a bit... with the ability to natively remove the Flash cookie-like crap on your system.

I swear this browser is the Firefox replacement... minus the lack of extensions support, but I don't rely on that stuff.

I haven't used Chrome recently but it's looking pretty good now, and I like the fact that Adblock Plus is now available for it...but does it still "phone home" certain information to Google like it did in earlier versions?

You would have to turn it off yourself. I think it is clarified in the Chrome wiki page...
