FF2/4 Asura - Unpowered, Overpowered, or Perfect?
« on: January 08, 2008, 10:24:03 PM »
Perhaps it may spur a debate, but I doubt it...

Asura in her various summoning incarnations seems to be either overpowered or underpowered. The only consistant thing she does is multitargeted Life1 in a 1/3 possibility (which is kinda fair, although I'm not even sure if this is rigged)...

FF2 - She has a 2/3 chance of healing.... you have a chance to heal with something 2x more powerful than Cure4, or a 3x version of Cure4
FF4/4A - She has a 1/3 chance of healing, which is 2x more powerful than Cure4, and the other 1/3 is a multitarget Protect (which seems very expensive...)
FF4ET - She has a 1/3 chance of healing, which is 2x more powerful than Cure4, but the other 1/3 chance doesn't seem to do anything.. it does the same visual effect that FF2 does (a Cure3 image), but it doesn't seem to do anything... (someone please look into what this does)

So, in FF2, she's technically an overpowered Rosa when it comes to healing, and in FF4 (any version), you would be freaking lucky if you get healed. To properly balance her out in FF4.. she should at least apply a dual Protect and Shell..

What do you guys think?

I think she's a ton easier if you have Reflect. Then you don't need to worry about her healing herself.

I'm talking about her summon spell for battles.. not her battle (because that's wicked easy w/o Reflect anyways).

Oh. Well, if she does Protect, then at least there's some gratification that it stacks with itself. Ok, for summoning, she's really helpful if you need a big heal because of Big Bang. The healing doesn't seem to be often enough, though. Maybe I'm just unlucky?

Well, as I tried to explain in the post (which apparently going through in one eye and out the other ) her probablity of healing is far better in FF2 than FF4. I find her too underpowered in FF4 to justify the 50MP cost (multitargeted Protect is not good enough IMO, although, IIRC, Protect has a hit rate probability that it relies on - which is important to note early game).

I've never liked Asura because of her unreliability.  I mean, if you desperately need healing, there's a 2/3 chance (in FF4) that you won't get it.  Like you said, it's a lot of MP to throw away on that kind of chance.

It's Protect with Cure 3's animation.

Anyway, I find Asura absolutely worthless, I've never had her use her Life spell when I needed it, I find Protect useless, and her healing spell just isn't reliable enough to summon her for that. She was a lot more useful in FF2us but I still didn't use her that often, Rosa's usually got healing covered.
