MLB Season (2010)
« on: May 02, 2010, 07:18:56 PM »
i haven't watched any Cubs games so far (they're .500), but noticed something odd with their stats.  the starting lineup position players are all batting over .300 -- except for Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, who are usually among the best hitters in the league.  it's only 26 games in, but it goes to show you never know what you'll get with baseball. :/  i'm definitely pleasantly surprised with most of the lineup, particularly Kosuke Fukudome.  let's hope he doesn't have another drastic drop-off as the season progresses (though i don't expect him to continue batting .342).

obviously, i don't expect people to make regular predictions here like we do in the NFL thread; that's just not practical with 2394898701 regular season games.  so this thread is here to post any random baseball observations or comments you may have, until the playoffs roll around.

Random observation #1: Roy Halladay still can't beat the Giants. He will destroy the NL otherwise.
Random observation #2: Fransico Liriano is back to his 2006 form.

The only team that will beat the Phillies in the NL this year...is the Phillies. They are 2 tiers above everyone else right now. The AL is going to be a race, though.

I'm too disappointed in the Cubbies, since they don't seem to "get it"... having Zambrano goto the bullpen is the most INSANE move I've heard of.

The Red Sox bridge year talk doesn't seem so farfetched.. sweep the Jays but get swept by the Orioles... the awful Orioles at that. Sometimes I wonder...

The only team the Mets try to compare themselves to are the Yankees... unfortunately Johan Santana (formerly of the Twins) is just like the Mets... not clutch when it counts. Then again, a Grand Slam and 10 runs accounted for last night does make one wonder that the Twins perhaps literally stole from the Mets (again).

Four days after Doc throws a perfecto (and the Marlins are still selling tickets to that), Armando Gallaraga of the Tigers was hosed out of a perfecto. Hasn't been a good season for the guys in the black shirts so far.

Oh yeah, Junior hung up his cleats today. The sweetest swing is done, after 22 years.

Anyone that has a clue knows it was a perfect game. It's OK that the ump fessed up. However, Selig has no balls, especially when he hasn't even touched on instant replay changes because of that game. Freaking lame. At least the guy got a car out of it!  :childish:

so the Cubs trade Ted Lilly (who is very good; look at his ERA and ignore his W-L which is butchered thanks to his anemically hitting teammates), Ryan Theriot (who is quite solid, and the only person on the team who can steal a damned base besides Starlin Castro), and $2.5 million to pay some of Lilly's salary to the Dodgers -- in exchange for Blake DeWitt and two minor league pitchers.  why does it seem like we got the short end of the stick here?  unless these minor league pitchers are maestros in the making; i don't even know their names yet..

the Cubs were the slowest team in the majors last year, with 56 total stolen bases.  this year, they're merely 3rd worst.  i'm convinced they're out to recapture their former glory with this trade.

and for the love of God, what do Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez have to do to get demoted from the 3rd and 4th spots in the lineup, kill a baby on live television?

The Cubs are 2 steps away from getting blown up completely. Funny, it seems Brenly's "dead-ass team" comment was more on the money than I thought it was. Two years ago this was the best offense , and a pitching staff that looked like it was going to end the curse. What the hell happened since then? :wtf:

There's something to be said of the lack of leadership for the Cubs. Part of it has to do with the front office, but if you hadn't pay any attention to '04 for the Red Sox, there's no help for you... unless you're the '05 Chi Sox.

Quote from: aug 19 game recap, AP
LOS ANGELES (AP)?Ted Lilly(notes) threw a two-hitter to win his fourth straight start since joining the Dodgers, and Reed Johnson(notes) hit his first homer of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night.

Lilly (7-8) had a season-high 11 strikeouts, walked two and retired 19 consecutive batters in his third career shutout. He threw 110 pitches.

lol.

The season is winding down, just 2 weeks left, and it looks like we know the playoff contenders...at least on the AL side. Yankees, Rays, Twins, and Rangers are getting in, of that there's no question. The only way the Red Sox sniff a hope is if the AL east just collapses while they get equally as hot, and that isn't gonna happen.

As for the NL, there's a bunch of teams competing for 3 spots: Giants, Padres, Rockies, Braves, and Phillies. The Reds are getting into the playoffs, and they will win the central, unless they becomes the Mets of recent and blow a 7 game lead with 2 weeks to play in September. Rockies decided that September is here, and they're winning 18 of 23 or something insane like that. For me, even though I have this innate hate for them, I want the Braves to win the east so Bobby Cox has one more shot at a title. The NL wildcard is gonna be a good race, or at least I hope.

Well, it was fun while it last for the Red Sox.. but too many injuries (Youk and Pedroia) and underperforming pitchers (Beckett and Lackey) really did them in.

At least the NL is interesting in terms of that race...

On the last day of the season, there's still 2 spots left to take. To top it off, 1/2 of the ultimate doomsday scenario has taken place: the Braves beat the Phillies, so they are at the worst-case tied for the wild card. The other half is if the Padres complete the sweep of the Giants to tie for the NL west. Should that happen, the Padres and Giants will play Monday for the division, and the loser of that game goes to Atlanta on Tuesday for the wild card. The playoffs start Wednesday. By the way, if the Padres win today, this will be the 4th consecutive season where 162 games was not enough to get everything settled. 2007 was Padres @ Rockies, 2008 was Twins @ White Sox, and 2009 was Tigers @ Twins.

If nothing else, I'm glad the end of the season has been something worth noting, because this is an anomaly all its own.

Yankees lose, Rays win, so it's the Wild Card for the Yankees... which may not be as helpful for the Twins who will play the Yankees...

Padres lose, so they lose their chance to make the playoffs... the Braves make it in (over the Phillies) with their final year with Bobby Cox...

This might be interesting....

Playoffs are set:
ALDS: Yankees vs Twins
ALDS: Rangers vs Rays
NLDS: Reds vs Phillies
NLDS: Braves vs Giants

Phillies have the overall number 1 seed, so to speak, while the Rays have AL homefield. Let the madness begin.

Don Larson now has company. Roy Halladay threw a no-no against the Reds in game 1. Do you think he's serious about winning?
