You know, I always thought it was either shell or protect, but I'm now realizing that can't be the case.  I'll ask my friend who hammered out most of those bits what he meant by barrier.

I'm not sure if you know this.. but I did figure out some of your unknown bits, and posted them in various threads.

The only thing close to a Barrier is Zeromus before using the Crystal on it.

The Tower of Bab-il documents say that Barrier is "Can't be hit with physical attacks (except Jump?)". I don't know how correct that is, as that's the limit of my knowledge about Barrier...  But it might be right.

The exception doesn't sound right. It would imply that Barbariccia have this protection as well. However, that simply is not the case.

This status would also occur in the Golbez-Rydia scene as well. Kain never gets hit by the death sequence, but he does not manage to hit Golbez on the way down.

I saw you figured out the level field in the monster table.  Were there others that we missed?

Barrier is given along with Reflect status by the Lunar Curtain. No enemies have it IIRC.

Do you know anything further than that?

This status is dispellable and sticks until the end of the battle. That's all I can gather at this time.

I also wondered if it was a lunar curtain thing, but I've never used a lunar curtain.  I thought it just cast reflect and image on you simultaneously.

I only remember using it for Bahamut's trial, but I never really noticed.

Maybe if someone timed the duration of the Walls. I normally go with active ATB+battle speed at 1. I don't think there is a difference.

If there is a difference, Barrier could be a boost for Reflect duration while you still have it.

I will have to look at this a bit more...

Barrier does not change anything statistic wise, nor does it magically change your damage output, whether it is magical or physical.

So I asked my friend what Barrier was.  He looked at it and said, "I... really don't know... what's a Lunar Curtain do exactly?"

I should clarify.  He knew what it did, he just wasn't sure specifically what the protection effect was in addition to reflect.  The next thing he said was "It puts up reflect and barrier... so whatever that extra protection is, that's what barrier is."

He figured these out by isolating those bytes in memory and then casting spells/using items.  So in this case the significance of the bit was more clear than the actual effect.  :)
