Bought a new computer
« on: June 15, 2008, 07:49:38 PM »
I've long sold off my Dell Precision 530 dual XEON server and I'm using a borrowed computer which is a Sempron that gets mega hot very quickly (151ºF).

So I bought this:

I'm just worried that my 2 large hdds (200GB & 400GB), Creative Audigy2, and GeForce 6200 can cope with the stock 240w power supply.  *cringes*  I wonder if it would be better to use one hdd and grab an enclosure that has a A/C plug for the other hdd.

After doing some rough calculations with that system + your parts, I came to a usage of about 290w. Although I don't know how much a geforce 6200 uses so you might be able to shave of  10-20w there.

Do you think I should get a USB HDD enclosure with its own A/C power adaptor?  That might reduce the power consumption?  I'll have to look up how much juice the 6200 uses...I would imagine quite alot.

I have this video card almost exactly (infact I think it is the same exact card):

It says it requires only a 200w PSU so I think I'm going to be ok.  Now, how much juice are the HDDs using?  They are both Seagates.

I'd recommend just getting a new power supply. Upgrade to like 550 watt power supply just to be safe. It'll make everything a whole lot easier.

I have to make sure it uses an ATX power supply first.  I'm obviously going to want to replace it once I figure that out.

6200 is low end..  (or is it even onboard?) Either way, you're not gonna need lots of power for that.

That 6200 was an upgrade from my 5700 and costed me only $40 with shipping.  I don't play games much anymore so it suits me.

I also found out that this video card only takes 200w, my hdds on the other hand I can't seem to find the power ratings for.

It's questionable whether a 6200 is faster than a 5700.

Rather unlikely, actually.

and that 200W doesn't even include the monitor's requirements, right?  i have a 27" Sony CRT television that doesn't even use that much, iirc.  how does a video card consume so much?

it doesn't.

the "rating" on that card is recommended minimum PSU wattage to install that card in an "average" system.

Lots of PSU confusion here.

1. your monitor draws power from the wall, not from the PC.

2. a 6200 will draw much less power than a GF FX 5700.

3. Video card companies tend to stick PSU requirments on the box that just aren't true. The reason is most people have SHIT PSUs(This is mainly because of OEMs.), and that a higher wattage PSU used to mean a higher quality PSU(this is no longer true.). a 6200 could run on a 150 watt PSU easy, provided said PSU isn't already loaded to the max.

4. HDs don't draw much power. The only time they use more than a few watts is when you power up the PC. Size of the drive doesn't matter, unless they got to 500 gigs by using 17 platters, which is, well, impossible for several reasons.

5. That PSU will run the extra HDs and video card with ease.

Given you're buying that PC used, I'd take the case off and clean it with a crapload of compressed air and ear swabs. It's probably got a fair bit of dust build up.
