Ah, after sharpening your claws on some other-FF rewrites, now your truly creative side starts to show. This is all really cool!
One question... what's the three step peninsula?

947
No I meant the part that turns the (Black) magic list into "Ninja."
Now that you mention it, though, there would need to be a corresponding battle command, which would definitely complicate matfers...

948
Too bad - but understandable - that the twins get the shaft. You know, it's funny you say that, because I can't remember the last time I played through ffiv without level grinding the twins at mt. Ordeals until palom has meteo. I always get a kick out of how "wowwed" they are at Tellah's perceived abilities when they're already beyond him (I'm a dork, I know).

I should look into the Ninja thing. Seems like it shouldn't be too tough to figure out. Also, given that they provided space for a few other options, I wouldn't be surprised if the conditions were expandable (wouldn't that be cool). Maybe the next time I need a side project... The hack's really coming along now. Soon...

Question - have you merged Black and White to make a seperate "Skill" command? Or did you do something much cooler than that, like crack the conditional Black/Ninja mystery?

950
Good. Wherever that is is probably doing the same thing.

I meant to say, btw, I didn't realize you figured out how to execute all of those av routines in the same command. I think I thought it was just multiple spell routines. Anyway, that's awesome. Nice work!

In addition to loading the message into the "battle message" byte of RAM, you have to activate otherbytes of RAM (that I don't fully understand). I don't exactly know why, but adding these four instructions will make it work:
Code: [Select]
$03/FF73 A9 F8       LDA #$F8
$03/FF75 8D C6 33    STA $33C6  [$00:33C6]
$03/FF78 A9 03       LDA #$03
$03/FF7A 8D C7 33    STA $33C7  [$00:33C7]
For my hack, I have this at the end of one command (Mime, right before the RTS), and anytime I need to display messages in a command, I make the end of the command jump there, to save code space.

Hmm... I probably only played it through once on the psx. All subsequent playthroughs have been on ps2 or 3... would that make a difference? Because I don't really remember ever thinking it was too slow.

It's not hard, but it's not quick either.
Open the rom whose palettes you want to edit in SNESPal:

Jump to the offset where the palettes are located:

For battle characters, there are 16 colors. You have to manually change the colors in your graphics editing program (I use Tile Layer, but should work the same using Tile Molester). SNESPal displays colors as values of 0-31 instead of 0-255, so multiply SNESPal's value by 8 if you want the colors to match exactly. The quicker and less accurate way would be to just match the slider positions for the R/G/B values:

When you have done this for all 15 colors (the first color is background, make it whatever works for you. I chose white.), your palette will match the game's:

Each battle character has a different palette, so you'll have to repeat the process if you want to see the next character's (Kain) palette, and so on.

Incidentally, if you want to actually change the game's palettes, SNESPal will allow you to do that as well.

... maybe that's why you can't learn magic...

Reading those essays will make you want to catch up on the FFs you've missed. FFVIII is my least favorite of the series (which ends at X in my opinion), but even that has its merits... the story is the most warped and intriguingly bizarre out of any - you will laugh out loud if and when you read the imagined genesis or the game in "Rise and Fall"... and Rinoa is by far the cutest out of all the FF girls.
FFIX is one of my favorites because it is purposely and pointedly a throwback to the feel of the earlier games (even if the big plot twist is stolen directly from... well I won't ruin the surprise, but those who've played it know what I was about to say), but with all the hardware advantages of the psx.

On that note, have you guys (n gals) read the rise and fall of final fantasy? Definitely essential reading for anyone on this forum... except pat also neglects the awesomeness of ffix...

I agree with you on the "whitewashed" point 100%, pinkpuff. Ffviii was the most aggregious offender, with a function that allows you to switch EVERYTHING from one character to another in one fell swoop.
You, like many others, forgot about poor ffix - so overlooked, and so one of my favorites!

The history in FFIV is just flat out weird. You get the sense that KluYa is this ancient figure who helped shape the world. nobody contemporary really has any idea who he is despite the fact that they all benefit daily from his influence. Yet he has a son who is, what, 18 years old? I'm ok with the idea that heis really old, like lunarians live a long time, but how is this influential alien guy completely erased from history and memory in less than 18 years?

As someone who grew up with FF but not so much LoTR, I always thought it was kind of cheap that Gandalf was such a skilled swordsman. I would've liked to see him cast meteo to defeat the balrog. Or maybe someone should have just told him that balrog is defenseless against Chun Li's yayaya kick.

Do you mean magic as in, what spells he can cast (as opposed to his magic power, I mean)?
If so... hoo boy, are you in for a treat...
