Ah, those are unique monsters, and have their own names separate from the normal Floating Eyeball and Zu. Try changing the second instance of those names you find, they should be near the end of the original FF4 monsters.

All of the text is stored in the script - all of it. One giant block, which is highly unusual.

As for adding events, no idea. I don't think anyone has ever documented the GBA version's event script. My guess is that it's nothing like the original, given how differently the rest of the data is stored.

Yeah, it used to be pretty common to call the original game "hard type" - thankfully that trend has died, because the game was never hard. Really, I personally don't think the changes made to the US version made the game that much easier; it's mostly just reduced item management. The hardest official version is on the NDS, and even that's not all that hard if you go about it the right way. The hardest part for me was unlearning years worth of strategy because the enemies (mostly bosses) have been mixed up a bit, and the equipment rebalanced slightly.

IIRC, Barbariccia has a weaker evasion rate in FF2US (in tornado form, where it does show more), but that could be my memory going.

I'm pretty sure she does; I misread the original quote. I thought he was saying that Kain couldn't hit her when jumping (MISS! is pretty common, but he does land a hit every once in a while) and that magic didn't work on her.

That page is a joke...

In the US we got "Easy Type" with much editing to the storyline.

Urge to kill...rising.

Quote
However, they did take out some character background for some strange reason.

The reason is quite obvious: money. The script is already crammed in the ROM pretty good, as cut down as it is.

Quote
For example, they left out the fact that Fu-so-ya is Cecil's uncle

I most definitely remember that fact still being present in FF2us...

Quote
Taking out a frame of animation where Cecil + Rosa are kissing so they just hug each other instead.

You lie!

Quote
Censoring swearing and rephrasing some "important" phrases (like the few that hint that Cecil + Rosa have been sleeping together on a long time basis--not that it's surprising that this would be censored in the US...)

Uh, what? One of J2e's embellishments, no doubt, but I'm having a hard time remembering it.

Quote
This room was taken out of the US FF2, probably so you can't get access to the Porno Book.

Yeah, because it's so hard to change the item a static event gives you, it's not like they didn't do that already for the vast majority of treasure chests...

Quote
Wrath of Zeus was a Bolt 3 spell

Not in my FF4...

Quote
Once when I was fighting Octomammoth, Tella remembered Thundaga. That was sure a quick fight.

You lie!

In FF2 US, there are no front or back lines when fighting the enemy.

Yes there are...

Quote
Many of the bosses were toned down for FF2US. For example, the Dark Dragon does much more damage with his Dark Breath, and Valvalicia cannot be hit in her spin except by Cain's Jump attack, or by magic.

Dark breath is HP based; you can hit Barbariccia in any version.

Quote
On a similar note, Asura is *much* more difficult to beat in FF4, since the first thing she does before you can do anything is cast "Protesu" on herself, making physical attacks do next to nothing

Yeah, that five extra points of defense really makes her impossible...

Quote
or example, the Molbol's Kusai Iki (Bad breath) gives you every bad status effect you can have, and since Ban Nouyakus (aka Heal potions) are so rare, if the characters that can cast "Esuna" get affected you're basically screwed.

Funny, I usually have an ample supply of remedies, without buying any. Of course, we all know to equip rune rings in that cave and prevent bad breath from doing anything to us anyway, right?

No specific quote, but I want to slap him for dropping random Japanese terms at every turn ("Reflek" is right up there with "pinku").

Heh, I went on a big chocobo forest finding spree after I found the one on the island (I figured there had to be something to that island), and found the one south of Troia that way.

No, you fight Troian monsters there. I believe the encounter zone overlaps with the island where the cave manus is located.

It doesn't. I ran tests moments ago. Just to be clear, it's the Chocobo forest that is close to the connecting shallows, but isn't connected at all.

It doesn't have Troian monsters or it doesn't overlap? I'm guessing the latter, since I was almost certain about the monsters.

You never really need to level grind in this game. I haven't watched your Zeromus fight yet, but I've beaten it around level 45 (mind you, only Cecil and Rosa were alive, and utterly dependent on perfect command input). Things you don't appear to be aware of from the movies I've watched:

You should not attack with rods. Go to item, press up, then double click on a rod to cast its magic. The normal rod uses magic arrow, elemental rods cast level 1 elemental spells, etc. With a single exception (turtle), this magic is always stronger than these weapons' attack when they're relevant.

Monsters have rows in this game! Don't waste your physical attackers on back row targets when you could be killing the front row first. You could've been one-shotting a lot of enemies with counters if you were wiping out the front row first.

Equipping two of the same claw on Yang has no benefit. Always have two different claws on him. As long as you're hitting an elemental weakness, an enemy's elemental resistance/absorption is ignored.

There are items hidden in pots and the grass in just about every map.

There is a small room on the right side of Damcyan castle's exterior with some useful equipment and items.

Alligators are weak against ice, not lightning.

You can heal for free in chocobo forests (heal with magic, then restore your MP).

The standard forest is called "Chocobo Forest;" the chocobo shaped one is the village. I'm not saying it was supposed to be a chocobo forest, just that it may have been a map at one of those locations. The island forest doesn't make any sense, and the other one isn't perfectly round like every other chocobo forest. Like I said, I still think it's likely that the island was the original chocobo village; it's isolated from the rest of the world, and there's absolutely no reason to have a normal forest at that location. They may have moved it so you'd be able to return after losing access to the Enterprise (Of course, you could also always return to Troia with a black chocobo, and screw up the location of the event with Kain). This map offers another possible explanation of what was there.

Another possibility is that the island was originally connected to the Damcyan desert via the shoals, so you could access the fat chocobo after getting the hovercraft. The monsters over there would absolutely decimate you at that point in the game, though.

How am I doing so far?

I know I'm late, (and that I've only watched parts 1 and 2 so far, and that both desynced about half way through) but it really needs to be said:

YOU SUCK AT FINAL FANTASY IV II US!

I'm pretty convinced there was supposed to be a cut scene with Kain that was never finished/completed.

That's one possibility I hadn't considered. I was trying to think of some place where it could be located, if it was supposed to be its own playable map, and the only thing I came up with was that useless chocobo forest on the island between Troia and Kaipo. Me, personally though, I kind of assume that was the original location of the chocobo's village, since it's so much larger than any of the other forests, with the exception of the one south of Troia. This place could've been there, too, I suppose.

The After Years has a few forested groves like this scattered about the map, which contain treasure. Maybe something similar was planned for this area, but there is no chest or tall grass in the playable area.

Interesting, it does look similar to the grove. It's possible that this is just an alternate design for it.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years (Wii)
Brought Porom, Palom, Luca, Calca, and Brina down to the start of the depths. They were about level 50 by the time I got there. I swapped them out for my normal party (Kain, Ceodore, Golbez, Rosa), then threw Ursula in the extra slot. She was only level 40, so I wasn't sure if it was such a good idea, but she held up fairly well. Her and Yang alone could probably finish this game alone (maybe throw in a healer too) if the enemy type weaknesses still did 4x damage. Got back to Ultros, but I still can't beat him. Kain can survive one "strong" tidal wave now, at least.

Headed back out to the Lunar Whale, picked up a new party (Gekkou, Yang, Leonora, Palom, Porom), then decided to bypass the subterrane and head right back for the depths. I accidentally clicked on the ???? underneath, which I assumed was a later area that wasn't accessible yet, and found the place to turn in my tails and adamantite, plus the new developer's office. Got adamant armor and an adamant helm; the armor isn't nearly as game-breaking as the original, and I'm guessing you'd need the full set on to get that kind of protection. I also turned in the black tail for twin stars, which reduce MP consumption by 50% in this game.

After finishing up in there, I teleported into the depths, but I was taking way too much damage, so I decided to run through the subterrane anyway. Honestly, I don't know why I'm bothering with the other characters. I should really just focus on getting my best up a few levels. I would like to use some of these characters, though, and I should get the others up just in case I'm forced to use them at some point.
:edit:
Got to the, I'm guessing, final boss. I did fairly well on my first attempt, and have a pretty good idea of how to beat her.

Before that I finished off Ultros. He's not nearly as hard as I though; two rapid Flares were enough to finish him off, it's just getting them in before he can heal himself and tidal wave you. I ended up taking Golbez, Rydia, and Palom so I knew I had a chance of getting a few spells off.

I also killed Ultima Weapon, for the Ultima Weapon. The sword's a bit disappointing; it's strong, of course, but it has no special feature to it, and even uses the normal dark sword/katana graphic. Too many weapons in this game use this same graphic, with the same blue and gold palette... Ultima Weapon himself wasn't very hard, more of an endurance fight than anything. Easier than Ultros, in a way.
:edit:
Finished it. I'll see about typing up an actual review sometime soon.
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

I forgot to mention it, but I did eventually figure out how to get to Archadia. I couldn't beat the Ahriman, though, so I decided to do some hunts and level up a bit, since I was neglecting both before I stopped playing. I just killed Orthros (he's a giant flan in this game?), which I found pretty amusing. Leveling is slow, I've only gained one level for the entire party so far.
