nobody knows, so we assume it's nothing.  Brian Fehdrau (the lead programmer) says that he remembers there was supposed to be a humorous aspect to it, but he can't remember whether the humor was to have the gourd do absolutely nothing, or to have some really obscure purpose.

most Charm checks are done straightforward in code by loading their variables and testing a bit.  i couldn't find any reference to the gourd's bit when i did a search of the charm variables in the disassembly.  however, some of the checks and updates (e.g. those done in the course of talking to people) use a complicated arse scripting language and interpreter, so you'd never find outright references to them in the code.  i dunno how the language works, either; i just know its existence from Fehdrau.
