Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: "Heal/Medicine" Command
« on: March 14, 2008, 06:44:20 AM »
Imagine the horror of not knowing how this command works, and using it repeatedly vs. the Antlion (where Edward is otherwise quite useless), and eventually seeing the command greyed out during the battle at Fabul Castle.  You need some healing anyway, so you go to your inventory to use a potion, which you have plenty of... except... you don't, because you've used them all.   :wtf:  :omg:  :bah:  :lame:

This makes very little sense to me.  Armor doesn't even have weaknesses as far as I can tell, only resistance.  It's not as if each item is weak against one and resists the other, and the weakness is taking priority.  There is no question of priority because there's no weakness!  The game is applying the opposite of the intended effect.

Blood Sword/Spear: It is very effective against flan/pudding monsters and Giants. The only monster worth worrying about is the undead and particular FF4A's undead flan monster (I forget its name off the top of my head, but that monster can be found on the "flan" level and in the FF4A beastiary...)

Dust Mousse, I think.  No need to fear these guys though; they're weak against holy.

General Discussion / Battle Stats
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:00:01 AM »
I figured it would be neat to keep track of statistics that you rack up in battle.  Things like, the most damage dealt by each character in a single attack, or the total amount of damage that character has dealt or taken.

Per character:
Max damage dealt in one attack (whole-party spells are cumulative)
Total damage dealt
Total damage received
Total damage absorbed
Total health restored (include potions)
Enemies defeated
Number of deaths (stone counts)

Include totals/maxes for the entire party for all of the above.

Total steps taken (on foot, by sea, by air, by river, in towns, in dungeons)
Treasure chests collected (%)
Battles fought (land/sea/river/dungeon)
Total gold earned (won in battle, found in chests, by selling items)
Total gold spent
Total consumables used (potions, tents, arrows, whatever -- could even list them individually)
Game saves

What else?

General Discussion / Re: The apartment people are retarded.

I'm surprised they even allowed you to give them separate checks.  Most landlords won't accept anything besides one payment in full to avoid situations where one person bounces a check or something.  But if these guys do allow it and you got all three checks in on time, forget about paying any fees.

I always paid my rent in person whenever I was able to (not practical if you work during the day).  This way you can get a receipt.

Gaming Discussion / Re: The Cute Chocobo > Old Man
« on: March 11, 2008, 10:35:55 AM »
Yep, despite his weakness to lightning, Lit-1 is the weaksauce vs. Octomammoth.  Chocobo is better, but of course the lion's share of the damage in that battle comes from Cecil's fast-hitting dark blade.

I can recall getting to that point in the game and thinking, do I need to spend all my money on this stuff when it only offers a small benefit?  And the answer was always, what else am I going to spend it on?  Especially if you find the free stuff lying around in Silvera.

113
Yeah, the problem is the bow hit rate is dismal.  And FF4A of course has that stupid bug, so you can't put Cecil in the back unless you want him to do no useful amount of damage whatsoever.  It's a huge shame, because Cecil in the back row does a great job covering Tellah.

Sometimes I go through the cave with Cecil in the back row decked out in full silver gear.  He just soaks up damage while the rest of the party fights.

114
Well, by comparison, Tellah's the suckiest thing since the lollipop.

This we knew.  :)

Cid usually gets in one attack, sometimes it's useful, sometimes not.  He's more useful in the magnetic cave since Cecil is forced to suck, he just goes painfully slowly versus the ogres in there.

115
The problem with Cid is not his damage; he typically equals Cecil, or almost.  It's not even his crappy defense (which is crappy).  It's his speed.  Cid is slower than molasses running uphill.  By the time he gets to take an action, Cecil and Yang have already cleaned house.

3. Rubicante has a rarely seen ending message, to get it you need to get him under 1000 HP and have your next attack do less than that.

Sometimes, I want to smack the programmers over the head for just doing that.

That was a big WTF for me.  I've played this game, I don't know, 15 times?  Never seen this.

Yeah, that's the thing.  You (can) get it early, and it's cheap.  It costs no more than Fire2.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / HP% Spells
« on: March 08, 2008, 09:29:03 PM »
Spells like Self-Destruct make perfect sense.  The spell power is 1, the HP% parameter (Column E in my table) is 100.  It does 100% of your current HP in damage to the target.  What does it mean for spells that have spell power greater than 1?  There are an awful lot of spells that are hp-based that I didn't know about, and it doesn't seem like the algorithm is as straightforward for these.

It's a ROM dump, so there shouldn't be any typos.  I don't know why that has 20 spell power, but it's reasonable to think that double meteor has some kind of special feature.
