If the speakers are not powered separately, then it will be drawing from the same power than the monitor does. The audio jack is just the connection, which isn't powered.

The only powered connections that exists are the USB and Firewire ports IIRC.

ah.  but doesn't the power drawn increase when the speakers are in use, or more yet, when the sound being sent to them has higher volume?

If the speakers have an on/off switch, then power is not drawn when off. However, if there isn't such a control.. they would probably receiver power regardless of the volume setting.

That is just my guess.

The video card offer (GT240) is nearly dead, as the offer stops at the end of this month (4 days away).

Two current Newegg combo options:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.336175 - eVGA GT240

The GT240 rebate says that as long as I have proof I ordered it before the 28th I can still get the deal, so I went ahead and ordered it.

Yep, and it's all shipped. I'm hoping at least my Newegg order is here by Monday so I don't need to worry about this trial running out. Wish I had gotten the check sooner.

Upgrade complete. :childish:

I haven't really had a chance to put it to the test yet, but everything is installed and working.

How's the system going now?

Hopefully you're not using the 196.75 drivers... ;) (196.21 is the latest stable set).

What happened to the arcade? Too lazy to reinstate it since I was the only one who ever played anything on it?

Great. Actually, I was running those drivers for the first day. I must've gotten them right before they got pulled down. I didn't have any problems with them, but downgraded anyway to be on the safe side.

I fail to see how this is relevant, but see here. I'll look into getting it back at some point.

so i started using that LCD monitor with the built-in speakers, and both picture and sound were working nicely.  but i noticed that if i had the monitor go into low-power mode with Windows power management or in response to the computer hibernating or suspending (but not physically turning off the monitor), there'd be a noticable hiss coming from the monitor's speakers.  i was gonna disable the low-power mode and tell family members to always turn off the thing, but i didn't do so soon enough. :'(  now today, the volume is greatly reduced, after somebody was away from the computer for a few hours.  i figured it was the speakers worn down by the extended hissing, but if i plug headphones into the same soundcard, i get the same diminished volume.

this suggests that the sound card itself got ruined..  but is such a thing even possible?  O_o  i would've thought the link between computer and speakers was more unidirectional.  the monitor speakers screwing the soundcard seems like the proverbial tail wagging the dog.  does anybody more familiar with computers and electronics know if this is a possible explanation?

also, is there some other volume control under Windows XP that i'm missing?  it'd be nice if there was a software cause for this.

thanks, and apologies again for the thread hijack.

I had a similar situation with a sound card, but it was because of a Y-splitter. Try taking it out of the PCI slot (if it's not onboard) and rebooting without it. Afterwards put it back in and yadda. If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure what you could do outside of a new card.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

it's a PCI card, combination sound card and joystick card.  fortunately, this computer also has onboard sound.  the PCI card (or its chipset) seems to be ~1999 technology, while the onboard sound is probably from 2002 or 2003 (the computer was manufactured in fall 2003), so Dell probably just included the card for its joystick capabilities.

i haven't done your recommendation yet, but it inspired me to try a couple things:
1) turn computer off, unplug, and hit power button to discharge capacitors.
2) disable sound card driver, turn off, restart, enable sound card driver, turn off, restart.

neither remedied it..  but i'll try yours when i'm less lazy.
