Actually, J2e's translation works flawlessly from what I remember. I may have been playing with an older version, before they did any significant changes, though.

Deathlike, do you know if ZSNES 2.0 will be accurate enough to break these hacks? If so, I'm wondering if that will be enough to finally motivate someone in the SMW hacking scene to make them hardware compatible. (I shouldn't say that, I don't follow the scene, maybe that already is a priority there). I wouldn't doubt it if Lunar Magic itself is the problem; none of FuSoYa's hacks I've tried worked on my copier, although other people have reported getting the SoM VWF hack working (I've never tried that one in bsnes, so I don't know how it fairs there).

Bleh, sounds like bad game design to me. Could it also be a problem with new code? What emulator are you playing on? I know every SMW hack I've tried has failed at some point on the actual hardware. If you're using an accurate emulator, something might not be working as intended. It's a long shot, but it's something to consider.

Okay, let's see...

The holy/white arrows are not sold anywhere:

Btw, I did say way back that you don't sell Holy/White arrows. The only time you give them is at Mt. Hobs in the treasure chest closest to Chang.

I thought Toroia old the White Arrows.

I'll double check Toria when I get there.. but I don't recall it being sold there.

One of those towns I put as many arrows as possible--I may have missed one.  Whoops.

The Holy arrows are not sold at Toroia.

The hack should probably be ported to revision 1.1:

Also, remember why there is a v1.1 of FF2? Well, IIRC, it is either the certain set of enemies.. or the gradual pertrification of the Medusa/Granite Sword vs certain enemies that makes the AI go nuts and lock up the game.

Tella's Life2 spell needs ot be axed:

Hmm.. I understand the MP Tab and Tella being able to use Cure4 ONLY if that was used.. however, I don't see the logic in allowing Tella to have the Life2 spell available. That's just a wasted spell slot.

The dark knight armor's location confounds Deathlike2:

Also, I don't quite understand why the weaker Dark Knight armor is sold at Fabul.. but the "missing set" is sold at Agart... is there more I should know about the armor?

The Dark Knight equipment is just some random shit I threw in there.  I can't remember if anyone else can equip that stuff or not.

Edge cannot reequip his kung fu gear after removing it:

There's the equipment bug. I thought it was the Mythril Glove that was bugged, but clearly it is the armor.

No one can equip the boomrang:

Here's the other bug:

Deathlike2's Rage-induced suggestion:

Suggested change..

Make sure the Rage spell Rosa has is renamed to Rage2 or Rage+ since it is a multitargeted spell... different from Cipher's Rage spell.

More suggestions (insect is US FF4 Advance speak for reptiles):

Another suggested change...

Retweak Bows+Arrows. Unless you change the attack power algo for Bows+Arrows (I personally think there needs to be a level bonus inclusion at the very least), it is still one of the more inferior weapons in the hack.

Once you have access to the airship, the arrows you sell should have approximately the same amount of attack power... except that elemental and (moreso) enemy type arrows need to be weaker since you are relying on them for the multiplier bonuses.

Also, the Elven Bow itself makes Mute arrows effectively obsolete... so you need to find a way to make the Mute arrows useful and/or make later bows expose weaknesses... or something as compensation.

Cipher gets too strong too quickly as well...

What's the deal of making no changes to the Rune Axe, but the Infected Axe gets so much love?

Also, I kinda wish the Insect attribute would get exposed more often... either by Poison weaponry or by Ice weaponry. Ice weaponry would be consistant with what the game currently prefers. Poison weaponry IMO gets little respect. Poison status doesn't work very efficiently, and frankly I've shunned it (hack or no hack) for better alternatives (Charm Claw or Cat Claw over the Poison Claw... Poison arrows aren't very memorable, even if they are stronger for the time being and some enemies drop them like candy, but are shelled in favor for the elemental arrows for damage multipliers). Poison would have to do its damage quicker to be useful (you may have to lower how much it damages for compensation, like reducing the damage from 1/8 MaxHP to 1/10 MaxHP and tweak the poison time appropriately).

A bug with confusion that freezes a certain sylvan cave battle:

Yes, another real bug!  :wtf: :omg:

http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ff2hack00003he1.png

If the tree in the back is confused, it will attempt to Poison your guys. However, the act of doing that freezes the battle (see Kain's hand up in the air as an indication).

Xlom cannot requip his diamond armlet:

Xlom starting equipment bug:

http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ff2hack00005sp3.png

At least you allow equipping some of the fighter type of equipment... (Gigas Glove and others)

http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ff2hack00004if1.png

Cypher can't equip the genji helm:

Any reason why the Genji Helmet is not equippable by Cipher?

Probably an oversight on my part.  I was rushed to release it on time and it appears I missed quite a bit of the small stuff.

Cefca suffers from the bug after auto hiding like Edward in FF2us. The easiest way to fix this would be to give him a fifth command:

A slightly less obvious bug.

If you tell Cefca hides (either automatically or manually) and then tell him to come out, once you get to his command list, the cursor can highlight the 5th blank command slot. When it is selected, Cefca becomes completely useless and his command won't come back up.

Rosa's second pray command is messed up:

You intentionally used the Pray version for Rosa the first time.. and when she comes back, she uses the lame Cure potion version?

Whoops on both.

Kain can run away with the sword of legend, which won't screw up the excalibur event but doesn't make much sense, either:

Hmm.. I'm trying to remember what would happen if Kain had the Legend Sword equipped before he left the party...

Probably nothing since the game only removes that item incase you have it.  The Adamant is the trigger for the event.

The strength staff "breaks" when you attack with it:

Any reason why the Strength Staff disappears like an arrow? After a hit, it disappears....

I don't remember that happening.   :wtf:  That's a very good question.

You probably accidentally set the arrow bit, that makes it so you lose the weapon after attacking with it.

Deathlike2 discovers why poison counters freeze:

I had a realization on what's causing the Poison freeze. Noting that timers in this game can cause the game to freeze.. using Poison as a counter would induce some of these types of bugs. Poison uses a timer when dealing poison damage, so it's fair to say that it wasn't intended to be done (since no enemy AFAIK does such a counter in the first place).

Cure4 doesn't work correctly on enemies, not much you can do about this:

Is there something odd about the Cure4 that the Holy Dragon casts? It doesn't quite heal the damage inflicted by your characters. A single targeted Cure4 should heal all the damage dealt to it (only 9999 damage can be dealt at max)... it seems to heal like it's targeting more than one unit...

 :edit:

Fixed a few links.

No, he's most definitely wrong. He states that several characters are the same...except for the fact that, in the original game, they're never in your party at the same time. I could waste my time countering it all, but it's not worth the trouble.

Oh yeah, you were definitely right. I'm not really into cars either, but as far as I'm concerned that stopped being a thread about cars after the first few posts. When "it's not American" is the only thing backing up your argument, you've lost. Now if they were explaining why using a foreign engine would be inferior, from a technical standpoint, that would be a completely different story.

Figures, it would take virtually forever at 9GP IIRC per battle at the time (~1000 battles... a few less because of the first battle I think).

This is going to sound really pathetic, but...I've done it before. Well, me and my mom; we took turns wasting our lives. The fact that having the gil changed nothing was disappointing, but at the same time it's exactly what I expected would happen.

You need to use split topic, then chose the post(s) you want to split, then merge it/them into the other topic. Yeah, it's a bit of a pain, I'm hoping they've simplified it for SMF 2.0.

Ah, yeah, I had completely forgotten about the bubble being there. Zyrthofar's viewer is nice, but it's not 100% perfect yet, and it does get some of the sprites and palettes wrong (plus fails in general when dealing with the 4BPP graphics). I didn't even think about that tile being the only one of its kind, I should have too, since I had the entire tileset in front of me.

Heh, good news about your editors getting updated. I'm kind of sitting on the fence here, part of me really wants to port my enhancement hack over to FF4 Advance, and part of me knows there's a lot more I can do with the SNES version. I suppose I could make two separate hacks, but I don't think I could find the motivation for that.

522
Just dumping this here, some weird sprite data in FF4 Advance (US version):

0xE567B - ????

The $02 at that offset seems to chose a palette for certain sprites, if you play around with it you can get Cecil to change colors. The next byte, $00, determines how to draw some of the sprites. It does more than one sprite, and there doesn't seem to be any real way to make use of it. When I first found this I thought it might be possible to make the character sprites larger, but I can't make any sense of how it works.

523
Tea was her name and she had the morning star for some reason--probably like you said in the beta.

Most people don't pick up on it (it was pointed out to me by someone else), but Benjamen's name is B and Phoebe's name is Tea: With a little rearranging, their names spell beta.

Also, those shots have a few floor tiles in the Ice Pyramid that aren't present in the final game (or ROM, IIRC).

And do you know if Zy ever updated his editor?  I'm really needing a map/event editor so I can start doing my complete new game using FF4 as a base.

No idea, I was never able to get in touch with the guy (not that I've really tried since then). Give Phoenix's map editor a try:

No, I don't think so, this is on the first floor, and that's at the top. The door in the crystal room works fine from what I remember, and puts you out on the other side like you'd expect. I'm pretty sure the door back there takes you to the same place as the normal exit door does. I've got screenshots of those too, but I figured everyone here would already know about them, so I didn't post those:

It's worth mentioning that The After Years makes use of the crystal room, but you still don't get to go out that door (you do see it, so it taunts you even more than the original!).
