Gaming Discussion / So hey, Strife got rereleased
« on: December 12, 2014, 03:15:20 PM »
Deathlike2 introduced me to this lost Doom engine action RPG a few years ago, and in the time since it's been completely reverse engineered and is, as of today, available to buy through Steam:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/317040/

Runs in an enhanced engine (first impression, from screenshots, is that the new lighting looks terrible), but with an original mode utilizing Chocolate Strife. Bought in a flash, can't wait to try this out!

Read what you will into "The Original" being used so prominently on that storefront...

 :edit:

The lighting isn't bad at all seeing the game in motion, actually. I kinda like it.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Add Reflect/Add Blink statuses
« on: August 17, 2013, 02:19:42 PM »
So I noticed a while back that the Wall spell, StarVeil (Light Curtain) and MoonVeil (Lunar Curtain) items had statuses set, despite using their own "Add Reflect" effect. I decided to see if having a status set mattered, and it does. These statuses were already documented in the old Tower of Bab-il docs:

Code: [Select]
05     7   D        magnetized
05     6   Stop
05     5   D        egg
05     4   D        defending
05     3   D        charging
05     2   D        twin casting
05     1   D        jumping
05     0   Count

06     7   D        hiding
06     6   D        hp leak
06     5   Wall
06     4   Barrier  can't be hit with physical attacks (except Jump?)
06     3   D        image high bit
06     2   D        image low bit
06     1   D        covered
06     0   D        critical

Add Reflect can successfully add Wall, Barrier, both levels of Blink/Image, and Hiding (cannot be hit with magic, physical attacks redirected to other party members). Nothing else appeared to work, but it seems Add Reflect may actually be a generic effect to add statuses from this "06" set, at least.

I tried the same with Add Blink, however that spell only seems to work with the two Image statuses and Barrier. When Barrier is used, however, it doesn't add Barrier status but instead just acts like Blink had been used.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Item descriptions
« on: January 24, 2013, 09:33:46 AM »
Turns out item descriptions are a simple range check and subtraction. The reason the "Caller's Magic Orb" description isn't shown? They test if the item value is less than $E7, not $EB.

So yeah, simple stuff, explains how J2e was able to give everything descriptions in their translation. I always assumed it would be more involved. They still did more work on top of that (their description hack uses a pointer table and supports using positioning on the string. This supports it too, but $00 will cause the string to terminate, which isn't an issue in J2e's hack.)

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Anyone got a Giant of Bab-il save?
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:31:33 AM »
Or a save before the giant. I want to test something, but all of my saves are end game or a few hours away from the giant. Any SNES version will do. Savestates are fine.

Gaming Discussion / Legends of Localization: Final Fantasy IV
« on: August 19, 2012, 05:58:55 PM »
Just wanted to point out this awesome article Tomato is currently writing:

http://matotree.com/localization/final-fantasy-iv/

A lot of it is probably common knowledge for us FF4 fans, but it's the most comprehensive English write up I've seen about the changes between FF4 and Easy Type (and FF2us of course), and it's only at the second town so far. I've never even heard of that sliding glitch mentioned in the Mist section before.

Gaming Discussion / Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection

Inevitable port of FF4 to another platform, PSP this time:

http://www.rpgamer.com/games/ff/ff4cc/screens/ff4ccss122010-1.html

It's FF4 Advance and The After Years packaged together, with higher resolution graphics like the PSP versions of FF1 and FF2. I'll probably pass on this one. I'm sure FF5 and FF6 are on the way, while we'll never get a real port of FF3.

General Discussion / Windows 98
« on: August 26, 2010, 06:04:08 AM »
Does anyone happen to still have a Windows 98 (preferably SE) install disc lying around they're willing to part with? I've got a handful of games here that run terribly since my upgrade, and every piece of advice for getting them to work either fixes them partway, or doesn't help at all. I'd like to try doing a virtual install of 98, but the only disc I have here is a recovery CD from my first PC, and there's no way of just installing Windows with it that I can see.

Dbi News / GoldenEye: X
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:00:22 AM »
GoldenEye: X is...you know, I already wrote a video description, and a RHDN news post, and an email to one of my friends who was a big fan of Perfect Dark. Not to mention Wreck already wrote a huge post about it and an extensive readme. Just watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrv5xpNKGOM

(You'll need to click that; the YouTube tag still isn't available out of laziness and fear filling the log with a couple hundred thousand errors again.)

FF4 Famicom Port

I found a copy of this on eBay and was considering buying it, but now that I know it's dumped I don't think I'll bother, unless the price stays really low (which I doubt it will - collectors will drive it up, I'm sure).

Final Fantasy II was released on the Wii's Virtual Console yesterday (3/8). It's likely just version 1.1, but I'll see about confirming it for sure so that it can be mentioned in the guides.

General Discussion / Upgrade time
« on: January 28, 2010, 03:14:15 PM »
Alright, I'm going to have a little extra money in a few weeks, and figured I'd give myself a nice upgrade before I end up spending it on other things like I did a few months ago. I definitely want to get a new PSU, and am going to pick up an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (I want to keep this under $300, and the full retail version would wipe out two thirds of that alone). I figure since I'm buying a copy of 7, I might as well go with the 64-bit version so I don't need to worry about buying another copy down the road, so that means I'm getting a better CPU as well. Finally, I want a real video card, since I have a few games here that don't run so well. The most intensive is probably Doom 3 (actually, that's a lie - it's emulating GoldenEye with the Glide64 plugin). I've already browsed Newegg and picked out some hardware, but I'd like to run it past you guys to make sure I'm getting the best possible for the money I'm spending.

PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371023
I know almost nothing about PSU's; this is part of a combo with the video card I've chosen below. Reviews make it sound pretty good; I am a bit concerned about the comments on short cords though, since I do have a fairly big tower.

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103279
This is the second cheapest socket AM2 CPU I saw, and the cheapest when you factor in shipping. It certainly outperforms the Sempron 3800+ I have in here now, but I have to admit I lost track of what a good processor was years ago. If I can get something better than this for about the same price, post a link.

Video Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150390
This was the best price vs. performance video card I could find. I've never owned an ATI card though, and I've heard their drivers are garbage that actually limit the power of the cards in most cases. If you can find me an equivalent nVidia card, go for it. I have one PCI Express and one PCI Express x16 slot.

That's about $235 (with OEM Win 7). Don't drive the price up to $300 just because you can  (I'll spend some of what is leftover on RAM, and if I have any after that the rest can go towards a game or two I'd like to pick up.)
