Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Yang's Battle Script
« on: September 26, 2012, 05:37:28 PM »
I wrote some stuff about Cagnazzo about his shell mode.

http://slickproductions.org/forum/index.php?topic=544.msg4314#msg4314

I should've tried to clarify this better.

3 is the defensive value of the index that the stats are based off of.
It's not the actual index. To be frank, I think defense is actually set (the value of 3), but the post wasn't about that.

Some background:
There is an index of data that is used to set the parameters of monster attributes. There are 3 bytes each I think.
These are used for assigning three aspects of the monsters. Attack, Defense, and Magic Defense.
For example, let's use the Kainazzo (Cagnazzo) in FF2US v1.0 data through an FF4 editor:
Attack: 0x16 = 3x44 @ 99%
Defense: 0x77 = 2x2 @ 50%
Magic Def: 0xDA = 10x48 @ 50%
1st byte = Multiplier
2nd byte = Actual Value
3rd byte = Effectiveness
For Attack, this means, the monster can produce up to 3 hits, with 44 attack power, with an accuracy of 99%
For Defense, this means, the monster can evade up to 2 hits, with 2 defense, with an evasion rate of 50%.
Note: Evasion is NOT factored in unless you use a script to SET the defense. 255 Defense = immune to all physical attacks (doesn't include Throw since it isn't a physical attack, Jump and Power however are) Monsters in general have NO evasion.
For Magic D, this means, the monster can magically evade up to 10 hits, with 48 magic defense, with a magic evasion rate of 50%
Note: Magic evasion is never factored in I believe. 255 Magic Defense = immune to all magic. IIRC, Magic evasion is never a factor for monsters, so it's an irrelevant stat.

The point of the info was that in some of the bugged versions of FF4A, the defensive set in the script is not done or is executed/enforced correctly.

In the script (when going into shell mode - the mode that causes the monster to heal itself), it sets defense to index 0x7A. This would produce a monster with the defense of evading @ most 3 hits, with 3 defense, and has a chance to evade @ 70%. If you have ever hit that side of the script with a low level Cecil, you will find him to do pitiful damage against Cagnazzo. The script works as intended as far as I can tell (unless you get Cecil to dish out 4 hits @ minimum).

Hopefully, that clears things up.

:edit: Clarification on the part of the script that causes the changes.

Jets - Stranger things have happened...

Quote
49'ers @ Vikings

49ers - Have fun!

Quote
Chiefs @ Saints

Saints - The Chiefs will temporarily be the cure that ails the Saints.

Lions @ Titans

Lions - Too bad Jeff Fisher is not there anymore... not that it matters.

Quote
Jaguars @ Colts (division)

Colts - Possibly an unwatchable game.

Quote
Eagles @ Cardinals

Cards - I'll give credit to the Cards for winning... on the other hand, the d-coord has foot-in-mouth syndrome.

Texans @ Broncos

Texans - I'm not entirely sure the Broncos are quite ready yet... especially due to last week's performance.

Quote
Steelers @ Raiders

Steelers - The ungreatness of teh Raiders!

Quote
Patriots @ Ravens

Ravens - I'm just hoping Bernard Pollard is out for the game. Then, I could kinda care less about the result.

FuSoYa is still relatively "complete". He closely mirrors Tellah in the sense that his MP never grows until level 70 (which Tellah still never gains enough MP for Meteor). Consider that is starting MP is 190 vs Tellah's 90... it could be coincidence but ultimately FuSoYa is a the #2 meh character in the game...

I considered Edward to be far more useful than Tellah and FuSoYa by comparison...

Gaming Discussion / FF4 (all SNES+GBA) - How To Beat The CPU v3
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:23:40 PM »
I was thinking about this during some small discussions about the Giant of Babil, and this occurred to me.

One of the biggest interesting "lie" in FF4 is the fact that the Tricker monster (the floating yellow Imp/Goblin) you find in the Lunar Subterrane. It has nothing to do with the fact that it can kick your ass if you cast Lightning on it, but it has more to do with the "floating" aspect.

The property of "floating" for monsters is simply cosmetic. The actual property that causes them to "avoid Quake" is being weak to arrows/projectiles (Air/Wind) so to speak. This is also the ninja reason why the v1 undead version of Milon/Scarmaglione and the Electric Fish are immune to Quake.

So, back to the CPU battle. Those "floating" orbs are actually not immune to Quake. Of course this isn't exactly the most useful info... killing the two smaller orbs (Defender and Attacker) causes the big CPU to own you... twice!

One of the few rare things people have not considered is the reflect property of Float. This technique requires FuSoYa, but it works just as well when Rosa has learned Reflect (if not Float). First off, cast Reflect on any party member (or just put the middle target for simplicity). Then, cast Float on the next turn.

Ideally, you want to give Float status to the Attacker. You have a 1/3 shot of that happening... but it's not necessarily the end of the world if you get it on the Defender. Simply start over if Float status is applied on the CPU... you don't want it immune to Quake. Once you get Float status on either of the orbs, just cast Quake. FuSoYa should be reasonably powerful enough to help out in dealing damage in this battle.. instead of being woefully useless. Rydia's best spell is still Sylph, to counteract the effects of the Attacker's attack... but Titan is still a capable spell in this instance (she's better off with Quake though). Having FuSoYa useful should make it far easier to counteract the healing the Defender does, assuming you gave Float status to the Attacker orb.

Worthy of note from this research.. revived monsters don't retain Float status... which is very different from characters (they still keep the status while in a dungeon).

Hopefully, someone considers this to be a viable option instead of the slow and painful "kill defender and focus on CPU" method or the insane "dish out as much damage after both Attacker and Defender are gone".

Some quick updates and scores:

Leno: 10-6
Me: 10-6

RG3 did pretty well.. though I didn't see the entire game. However, I think the Saints defense isn't looking that hot.
I really don't know how the Jags @ Vikings game came to where it ended up late.. I got bonus coverage and that boggled my mind a little.
49ers seemed to have complete control vs a somewhat discombobulated Packers.
I caught a little bonus coverage of the Seahawks and Cards game to see a WTF moment with the 4th TO.
Also, Peyton looks mostly like himself during SNF...

Week 2 schedule:

Yay?

Quote
Bears @ Packers (division, Thursday)

Packers - It would be nice if Cutler stayed quiet more...

Quote
Chiefs @ Bills

Chiefs - Go figure on the Bills last week... complete and utter disaster.

Quote
Browns @ Bengals (division)

Bengals - The Browns d is far ahead of the Browns... "Oh MY GOD, we still have no QB!"

Quote
Vikings @ Colts

Vikings - Rare moment of clarity for me.

Quote
Saints @ Panthers (division)

Panthers - Someone better make up for that disaster for the Panthers last week...

Quote
Texans @ Jaguars (division)

Texans - It's sad that the Texans practically have no competition in the atrocious AFC South.

Quote
Raiders @ Dolphins

Raiders - No backup long snapper? Oh well.

Quote
Cardinals @ Patriots

Pats - Cards are "Steelers west". Go figure.

Quote
Buccaneers @ Giants

Giants - This game might be more interesting than it first looks.

Quote
Ravens @ Eagles

Ravens - Vick is very likely to be taken out sometime during this game...

Quote
Redskins @ Rams

Redskins - I hope to see a bit more RG3.

Quote
Cowboys @ Seahawks

Cowboys - Luckily the Seahawks won't get a 4th TO this time.... maybe?

Quote
Jets @ Steelers

Steelers - The Jets are not as good as their week 1 score says... the Steelers are not as bad as their week 1 score says.

Quote
Titans @ Chargers

Chargers - Good luck to Hasslebeck. He'll need it.

Quote
Lions @ 49'ers

49ers - This rematch could be atrocious.

Quote
Broncos @ Falcons (Monday)

Broncos - Not even a dome will stop the Broncos here.

To bring some sanity to explaining FuSoYa... his equipment set is virtually the same as Tellah, except he can also equip bows+arrows. I've tried using that combo on FuSoYa (Elven Bow+Lightning Arrows) and that produced pretty mediocre results (the Samurai/Yoichi Bow probably would help a little).

It would make sense to move out Edge in this instance, if FuSoYa was meant to stick around. He's the only character that never leaves you when he joins...

If FuSoYa was never meant to stick around, can you imagine a kickass group of Cecil, Cid, Edge, Rosa, and Rydia? That would be genuinely storming that Giant.

I'm trying to recall if the CPU battle considers the CPU as a back row target when one of the front row targets go... because that would make Kain invaluable if he was meant to be involved in that...

Just sub in FuSoYa for Cid... easy!

It was never really worthwhile to have FuSoYa on the team.. since you already had better options available with more MP to work with. Then there's also having hammers designed explicitly to do the Cid-Hulk's bidding.

Besides, Edge takes WAY too much damage despite having the Thunder Claw at his disposal. I haven't quite figured out if giving him all Genji/Samurai armor would help (I don't think it does IMO).

Cid would be absolutely perfect in the role anyways... he has HP high and is simply the perfect damage soaker of the team, particularly since he has virtually has no evasion to speak of and his agility growth is atrocious. If this were FF4A-ish, I'd prefer Cid over Edge easily (though Edge would be still be great for the Elementals battle).

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Jump Command
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:40:48 PM »
I found out a bit on the extra accuracy when I had been testing Jump on a Behemoth (and EvilMask). The damage dealt didn't entirely match up with my math. Remember the Blood weapon series has low accuracy... so I had to account for some other stuff. Eventually I finally understood why the Blood Spear was superior to the Blood Sword (Jump is the #1 reason).

If you ask me, Cid would eat up the monsters in the Giant... the equipment would've probably sucked (probably Silver/Mythril equipment across the board) but that's kinda what you would've needed anyways... although Cid could actually equip the Samurai/Genji armor set AND the Dragoon armor set as well (and not to forget the Diamond Armor series)...

Then again, Gaia's Hammer would actually be inferior vs the Elementals... at least would be a more interesting battle there.

« on: September 12, 2012, 04:01:42 PM »
I will say this...

In relation to your other posts, the commands Power/Deadly, Jump/Dbl Jump are commands that apply a status to the character. It would be most similar to Twin and Hide/Show, but I don't believe FuSoYa's Regen/Spirit Wave command falls into that category (since it's technically a different timer that's involved I think - no status change involved).

 :edit: Added Hide/Show

Also.. Spirit Wave does make me think FuSoYa was never meant to be on the the trek inside the Giant (Cid was the intended target) due to message after using the command...

Double damage to flying monsters is an aspect of most spears. The exceptions are the Blood Spear/Lance and Abel's Lance.

Blood Lance would "appear" to do less damage against certain monsters, but it's the monster's "Absorb" bit is "Drain" resistance. So, if you use the Blood Spear vs a Behemoth or Wicked/Evil Mask, it would do more damage than the Red Dragon (Red Dragon absorbs Fire).

This is also the general reason why the Blue Dragon is more resistant to the Dragoon Spear or Bow+Artemis Arrows than the Dragon Whip/Whisker.

  • Armor equip slots: The armors have flags that seem to be set corresponding to what equip slot the armor goes in (Head, Body, Arms, Hand). However, like with the weapon equip properties above, changing these bits has no effect on what slot the armor actually can equip. I suspect that as above something is checking the index range, as once again, the armors of the same equip slot are all next to each other.

I'm pretty convinced that most of the coding for this is probably terrible since something like this should be fundamentally pretty easy to do codewise, but very likely deadlines were responsible for it...

Quote
  • Key items: The game seems to treat some items as key items (they appear yellow in the item list and you can't drop them or sell them) and the item data does not seem to have such a flag corresponding to this property. It could be that there's a table or list of them somewhere; in any case being able to change this would definitely be a huge plus to anyone doing any kind of major hacking project.

If you are clever enough with a debugger, you may want to put many key items in the inventory, such as the Pink Tail and give some to the tail guy. A trace could probably provide some insight as to where they are being checked from. The Legend Sword is also one of them, and that will most certainly be part of the list, despite being in the middle of nowhere...

Quote
  • Spell casting animations: By this I mean, some spells when you cast them produce a green ring around your character and the black magic casting sound. Others produce white cubes and the white magic casting sound. As with the item properties above, it seems like these are hard-coded by index as there does not seem to be any flags in the spell data indicating this information, and the ones with like properties are next to each other in the list. It would be great to be able to change this property so that you can, say, replace a formerly black spell with a white one and not have it produce a black casting animation when your character casts it.

I know Phoenix did some work in this area regarding spell learning, but I'm unsure if he make sure the spell animations correlate... White, Black/Ninja, and Summon are all accessed by their index, so a trace regarding this is probably necessary.

Quote
  • Out-of-battle effects of items and spells: There was some discussion in the thread for the editor that mentioned that these kinds of effects appear to be triggering map events of some kind. It would be great to know what spells are triggering what events, and even better would if it would be possible to edit which spells and items trigger which events.

Some Event trigger examples:
Exit and Warp spells
Alert/Siren item - monster summon
Dwarfbread -  map overhead effect (same with the spell Sight)
Tent/Cabin - save/overworld animation
Summon items - Cockatrice, Goblin/Imp, Mage, Bomb
Flute/Whistle - Big Chocobo summoning
Emergency Exit - same as Exit spell in item form (except it won't cast Exit in battle - strange IMO)
I'm not sure if the SomaDrop+Apples are event items....
Magazine - does this need an explanation?

I think that covers most of it.

The equip as arrow flag does have an effect - it makes the item be consumed on your next turn after attacking. One of JCE's hacks had a weapon that broke using that.

Yea, I remember that. I wonder if it is tied to any code that gives you 10 of said item. All Arrows are usually given in that quantity... it could be strictly for arrows (not checking the bit, but the index range). I haven't exactly tested that out.

Well, the streak of defending SB champs winning the first game comes to an end. The refs didn't really affect the outcome too much, outside of a missing hold or two...

Romo wasn't too shabby and it seemed to be Ogletree's day. Beating down a former Colts special teamer/DB shouldn't have been too hard... good start to the season I guess.

Just abuse Warp/Exit why don't you?

The finisher with an "explosion" in the end of the clip - that was priceless.
