i just got a pm on rhdn from the maker of this thing and he's all pissy with me for leaving a negative review instead of telling him about the problems.  i'd love to know how i'm supposed to contact him with no contact info available anywhere.

my favorite part of the pm:

Quote
I'm not sure what it is about this website but people seem unusually critical about my hack here and really like it pretty much everywhere else on the web.

am i allowed to post parts of pms/what if they're from a different site?  i know the mods at rhdn get uppity about it(posting pms, that is), at least last i knew.  feel free to remove it and replace it with a summary if a direct quote is no good.

Here's a message to the author of the updated hack:

PLEASE TEST YOUR OWN HACK FROM THE BEGINNING.

Thanks for reading this message.

Unless there was some weird drama with it, I don't see a problem. Use common sense, that's all.

Also, I hereby rename this hack to The Eternal Bugged Crystals.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

I don't really like the idea of it; they are supposed to be private after all. I'd ask the guy permission to forward it onto some other people who are critical about the hack, and if he agrees, you can post it here.

Anyway, based on your snippet, I'm guessing the other places he's posted it aren't ROM hacker centric like here/RHDN, and certainly aren't populated by the entire team working on the most extensive FF6 hack of all time. They might not know how easy it is to fix these bugs, or simply don't care because the hack is the greatest thing they've ever seen come out of FF6. Like DL2 said, it's not hard to please us:

PLEASE TEST YOUR OWN HACK FROM THE BEGINNING.

The hack does some cool things, but it just fails because of all the bugs. That Gilgamesh battle was absolutely ridiculous; you can get to Mt. Kolts in about an hour, with leveling and talking to NPCs. There is no reason to have a bugged battle like that in the first hour of your hack. If, for some reason, he didn't know how to fix the battle, there's here, there's RHDN, there's Mnrogar's...if he posted to any of these sites, I'm sure one of us would be there to help.

Feel free to forward this post onto the guy.

Apparently, all the bugs have been fixed in the newest version. I'll pass that along to him and reply more to stuff later when I'm not on a cell phone.  I want to try it out later and see. He also passed me a link to his site. Maybe someone can add it into the info for the game on rhdn? At least then people will be able to contact him. Or maybe pull his email address off the siteor something. I haven't been there yet.

that's what i said to him.   it's a romhacking site, of course it's going to get ripped apart.  it was interesting the way, in the pm, he kept calling the infinite loop and gilgamesh bugs "silly little bugs" and not, you know, recognizing how annoying it is to run into things like that.

anyway, here's the website:

http://geocities.com/metroidquest/Metroid_Quest/Final_Fantasy_6_EC.html

i just passed along the news that geocities is closing down.

he also posted up a youtube video that apparently "disproves" my claim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF5kCUE_L7w

btw, EyesOfMidgar, who now has a review of the game on rhdn saying nothing but that mine is bogus, is the fucking author.  why he needs 2 names, i'm not sure.  also, the 4th review is some kid from youtube who makoueyes got to register with rhdn to do nothing but post that conflicting positive review of the hack.

check out that video, btw.  kinda dumb to "rally" people on youtube to praise the hack on rhdn. not surprising, though.  he comes off as such a whiny bitch in the first pm he sent me.

part of the problem also is that in his comments on what changed from 9.06-9.08 all he says is that he fixed the dialog glitch - he makes no mention of the infinite loop, nor does he of the vargas bug, which he claims was fixed in 9.06(check the author's comments on that version), but clearly wasn't because it happened to me in 9.06.  when i'm writing the review, why would i assume that he's fixed these glitches when he doesn't say it? especially considering that in the comments for 9.06(which, again, i was playing, not 9.08) he says that he fixed the problem with gilgamesh being unwinnable.  clearly he hadn't fixed it for that revision, as leno had to help me with it.

regardless, all this could've been avoided if this guy would leave contact info somewhere.

I accidentally approved his review at RHDN; we normally don't allow the review system to be used to dispel other reviews in that way (if you write a positive review, that's fine, if you mention the negative reviews, that's also fine, but you can't call out a specific review in the way he did), but I misclicked and approved it isn't of hitting the reject button. It's gone now, thanks to Nightcrawler.

There's really not much we can do about an influx of positive reviews from his video; there's nothing wrong with them, provided they actually write about the hack and not another review.

i do agree with you, it just seems dumb.  my review came about because of his lack of clarity of what he fixed, lack of contact info, and really annoying bugs.  he turns it around that he's getting unfairly criticized and recruits idiots from youtube for his "cause".

ah well, whatever.  maybe i'll give the new one a shot and see how long it takes before i hit a big bug.

:edit:
childish is the word i'm looking for, but anyway..

i just got some approval e-mails, thanks!  i'm trying to contribute to the site in some way.  i saw awhile back that one of the staff was saying that rhdn doesn't get many reviews, so i figure i can do something about that.
