RIP Bears season. Some thumb injury to Cutler came up... and I doubt the backup will do a good enough a job to keep the Bears in the chase for the Wild Card... Texans are in a similar boat (a week ago).

Week 12 schedule:

Gobble gobble! Isn't there some sort of obligatory turkey icon (or a pumpkin icon?) Maybe a Christmas hat too...

Quote
Packers @ Lions (division, Thursday)

Lions - It's simply just a hunch.

Quote
Dolphins @ Cowboys (Thursday)

Cowboys - I think the Cowboys are slightly better than the resurging fish.

Quote
49'ers @ Ravens (Thursday)

Ravens - The game will be close... too bad I can't watch this...

Quote
Texans @ Jaguars (division)

Texans - No Schaub for now is not the problem... yet.

Quote
Bills @ Jets (division)

Jets - The Bills bandwagon is falling off... not that the Jets are doing so hot.

Quote
Browns @ Bengals (division)

Bengals - I get the feeling the Bengals will rebound after some brutal division games...

Quote
Vikings @ Falcons

Falcons - Home Sweet Dome

Quote
Cardinals @ Rams (division)

Rams - Meh, another ugly matchup

Quote
Panthers @ Colts

Colts - One of the last few chances to not be the next Lions.

Quote
Buccaneers @ Titans

Bucs - It's not for a lack of trying that the Bucs kept it close with the Packers...

Quote
Bears @ Raiders

Bears - I don't think the Raiders are that good... even with the loss of Cutler.

Quote
Redskins @ Seahawks

Seahawks - Go figure. This looks like a shitty matchup of sorts.

Quote
Broncos @ Chargers (division)

Broncos - Go Team Tebow?

Quote
Patriots @ Eagles

Pats - I'm not comfortable with this pick, given SNF.

Quote
Steelers @ Chiefs

Steelers - Perhaps NBC couldn't flex in the Pats... although I guess the Eagles just came off SNF.

Quote
Giants @ Saints (Monday)

Saints - I get the feeling there will be a Giants slide to go with the Giants schedule.

fortunately, the Chiefs and the Vikings are in their remaining schedule.  also, i was already writing off the second Packers matchup as a loss, so there's no change there.  not to mention, Caleb Hanie did a respectable job in the NFC Championship game last year subbing for an injured Cutler.

Well, your team came from almost sure Wild Card berth (with the Lions, Packers with the division obviously) to barely getting in there. There's no guarantee that Hanie will win all the games that would've been a "sure bet". You're also competing with the likes of the Giants/Cowboys and Falcons. Every win+loss will change the outlook. I kinda expect the Giants to fade (they seem to have one of the tougher schedules left), but you're gonna have to put the work on the d and special teams to even have a chance.

yeah, it will be tough.

my tentative projections have the Saints and Cowboys winning their divisions, the Bears and Lions edging out the Falcons for the Wild Card slots, and the Giants finishing not so hot (as you've predicted).

The Falcons do have a tougher schedule than the Bears, but IIRC the Falcons have made the playoffs practically every year since Matt Ryan started at QB.

Scores Ending Week 11:
Leno: 9-5
Gil: 9-5
Me: 9-5

Combined Scores Ending Week 11:
Mate: 19-13 (DNP weeks 3-11)
Gil: 81-66 (DNP week 5)
Leno: 95-65
Me: 100-60

Scores Going Into SNF Week 12:
Leno: 9-5
Gil: 11-3
Me: 8-6

There shouldn't be any change after SNF+MNF on the picks (Steelers+Saints). Congrats to Gil for being ahead of the game this week... or maybe it's just lady luck? :P

Notes on some of the games:
CBS Early Game (Bills @ Jets) - It was kinda interesting, and yet it wasn't. Simply ugly.
FOX Early Game (Vikings @ Falcons) - It was interesting to see a 104 yard return for no TD. Plus there was no followup TD, but a fail via a missed challenge.
CBS Early Game Bonus (Browns @ Bengals) - Meh
CBS Late Game Bonus (Broncos @ Chargers) - Only the Chargers could lose this
Thanksgiving Games - Lions might just fall off the proverbial cliff w/o Suh. Packers might just go undefeated. Fish could've won that game... but didn't. Cowboys get some credit, but they are not that great overall. They have some toughness I guess.
Disappointing - Da Bears. Clearly the playoff game was more the aberration than the norm. Sinking fast is the Bears hopes.. the Falcons will claim a playoff spot. The other spot is very much up for grabs.

i think some of the Bears' chances will come down to how motivated the Packers are to win their final game, as they've effectively wrapped up the division already.  if they're 14-1 going into that last game, they probably won't care much, as they'd already be guaranteed #1 seed in the NFC.  if they're 15-0, they might put in more effort to achieve a perfect record.  if they're 13-2 (or a Loss total that matches whatever the 49ers have), they'll be motivated to secure #1.

so i best pray the Packers lose exactly one game. :P

also, the Suh suspension bodes well for us.

Nothing in the Packers schedule threatens them. I've tried to imagine the scenarios.

I'm not sure if Suh would've make enough of an impact against the Saints... he had trouble with the Packers on his one-on-one matchup. He would be less needed for the Vikings. Even then, there's an expedited hearing for Suh's appeal... he might lose a game (unlikely, but not improbable). The Lions schedule is actually harder to accomplish than the Bears by far.

The major problems with the Bears is that of the Mike Martz.. again, failing to properly adapt his schemes to a rookie QB. Also, the matchups that would appear less difficult are actually significantly more difficult. The Chiefs suck, but Hanie could make Palko look like a franchise QB or something (although, it will be an Orton game AFAIK). Then you have Team Tebow to face. I'm sure that'll be a lot of fun. The Seahawks are a very uneven team (they've beaten the Giants, despite really sucking against the NFC West).

Nothing is that guaranteed with the QB situation the Bears have. It's more like the Texans in a way... you might just make the playoffs, but what then?

man, that was a horrible game.  i considered it a must-win and a nigh-sure-win for the Bears (that and the Vikings game), so this really throws a wrench into their playoff hopes.

besides being horrible on both sides offensively, it was flat-out weird:

- Matt Forte leaves in the first quarter with a knee injury after being upended on a tackle.  (his cleats might've stuck in the new grass  momentarily, making his leg more vulnerable, per the announcers.)
- Kyle Orton comes in for his first play in the 2nd quarter, and when throwing a bomb on a flee flicker, dislocates his throwing hand index finger in a collision with Major Wright.
- Palko throws a hail mary for the Chiefs at the end of the first half.  two Bears are in position to intercept it in the endzone, jumping up for the ball with no Chiefs having a visible shot at it.  Brian Urlacher tries to catch it, while Chris Conte decides to volleyball spike it -- unfortunately, driving it right into the arms of the Chiefs' Dexter McCluster for a touchdown.

Caleb Hanie wasn't as bad as his 0 TD / 3 Int line indicated.  in the first half, he threw a touchdown to Marion Barber that was called back because Barber lined up wrong (though they would get a field goal out of it).  his last interception was on the final play of the game on a hail mary, as they needed to go 80 yards with 6 seconds left, so it's hard to blame him.  his 2nd interception was near scoring on a ball that Roy Williams could have caught on the Chiefs' 2-yard line, but bobbled, and after several Chiefs juggled it, they made the interception in their endzone.  had the receiver held on, the Bears would've scored on that play, or been damn close.  Hanie actually led the team on a very nice drive up to that, throwing a lot of quick accurate passes, mostly up the middle.  also, the offensive line was back to sucking, giving up 7 sacks.  :omg:  though at least one of those was Hanie's fault from holding the ball too long.  also, on a couple of the sacks, it seems the young QB was employing a 12-step drop, because he'd lose 9-10 yards on each of them.  seriously, when does Cutler ever lose that much yardage?

two consecutive sacks prefaced a rare Robbie Gould field goal miss.  of course, it would have been easier if the Bears could see the future and have him do a 25-yard chipshot on 2nd down rather than the 41-yard attempt two plays later. :P

still, kudos to Kansas City's defense and to their rookie QB, who really started showing more poise after re-entering the game in the second quarter.  the hail mary completion was a fluke, but he did lead them on a nice, long drive before that.  also, props to the Bears' defense, who had to deal with gobs of three and outs from their horrible offense (that, complete with 0-11 on third down conversions and lots of incompletions was the real flaw with Hanie, not the misleading interceptions tally).

Forte's early departure shows how dependent Chicago is on him.  not just for yardage, but as a pressure release valve.  by that, i mean there were lots of plays this year where Cutler would dump it off to him on a 3-5 yard pass, and then he'd run for many yards after the catch.  since it was often successful, i think Bears viewers saw it as a sign of strength, and coincidentally, the once-horrid offensive line improved a lot over a handful of games.  but in some ways, it was a sign of weakness.  why is your cannon-armed quarterback throwing the ball 3 yards in the first place?!  because the defensive linemen are closing in on him on the current play, or because he just ate ground on the last play.  so a play borne out of desperation became a staple of the Bears' offense.

Barber is a decent back, but he doesn't really have the track record of receiving and adjusting after the catch like Forte does.  so when the latter left the game with the knee injury, this key aspect of Chicago's offense was gone, and the offensive line's issues were revealed anew.

worst of all, i turned on the TV at 12:05pm CST sharp, expecting to see the game starting, but they were already 2 minutes into it because it actually began at 12:00pm!  the horror!!
