Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: "Heal/Medicine" Command

I always liked the Spirit Wave command that FuSuYa had (regen).  It just wasn't powerful enough.

I think I was more pissed at the "waste" of a command it was... until the GBA version. He's not stuck on doing essentially next to nothing.

Split would be cool if he could split any item. Split Phoenix Down, Remedy, or X-Potion would certainly have their uses.

A lot of these uses are outlived by superior solutions.

All I can say that you should try to make the most of the dialup.

As long as you have MPPC support (Microsoft's 2k/XP(and Vista?) answer to STAC (it's software compression, but it's done all server side for improved compression overall)), you should be fine.

No. Here's a hint: Go to the Serpent Trench, and find this spot. There's a really obscure bug in the original at that spot, and unless you accidently find it, you probably never will.

Beats me. My only guess is a hidden treasure chest or something you shouldn't be able to normally walkthrough...

:bah: Useless...it seems like there's so many useless commands in FF4. They all need to be rebalanced, if we can figure out the data for them. I'll be working on it...

This is one of the rare instances that I would say that those commands being removed for FF2 US wasn't completely a dumb idea. Only Dark Wave needs to be kept.

If you are using a potion, and split it, that's what it is.

Since the command itself isn't powered by level or any particular stat, the effective power is constant. Worse is that the effect is consistant regardless of the number of targets that it successfully hits.

The command is consistant in both SNES and GBA versions.

Isn't Frog Song the only song he can sing while a frog? That's all he's ever sung for me... not that I've frogged him that often...

Yes.

This is one of the few commands that favor the harp attacks than the command itself.

If you think Spirit (FuSoYa's command) can heal more, try tinkering with the Vitality value of that character.

Life2 doesn't do any sort of MP restore.

I'd have to replay FF4 (which I will get around to doing soon) to see the differences... but I don't recall many differences in terms of Sing.

The song selection appears to differ depending on the harp... (probably in the selection ratio). The Dreamer Harp tends to sing lullibys whereas the Charm Harp tends to sing the Song of Confusion.

Once in a while, Edward does not sing of any particular effect.

Frog Song exists when Edward is a Frog himself.

Sing refuses to work while Edward is Silenced.

Recall can be used on anyone (I've tried it on at least four different characters), and casts a random black magic spell. If the character doesn't have enough MP for the spell (like Edward) then the battle sprite walks forward and performs its "special" graphic. For Edward, this is when he hides, which looks like sweat (or tears?) coming out from him.
It's not a random spell, I don't know where it gets what spells to cast but it seems to be limited to Fire1, Ice-1, Lit-1, Virus, Stone, Weak, Fatal, and I'm thinking Toad for some reason but I'm not sure. I haven't actually used the command in a long time since it's pretty worthless.

I believe there is a given set, but once in a blue moon, a higher level spell is cast. I do recall Lit-2 being cast on Octomammoth. There is a lame set and there's the "wicked awesome set"... unfortunately the whole thing relies on luck and having enough MP available.

Has the black magic icon always been transparent in battle? Not in the magic list, but when it's actually casted, the black color is transparent through to the battle background. Was it like this on the SNES? I can't remember, but in SNES9x it's that way. I'm using the FF2us ROM.

Here's what's happening: since the text is only 2 bitplanes, there's only four colors -- black, gray, white, and transparent. The normal transparent is used to show the window background (blue). Apparently, black is used to show the battle background through, at least that's how SNES9x is rendering it.

It's been like this since the dawn of this game, emulated or not.

Does this happen in ZNES (or the other versions)?

Regen will regenerate HP eight times, then the character will be able to move and choose other commands. I verified this on at least two characters besides FuSoYa. (Sidenote: Does anyone know if this command always restores 10 HP per character? That's what I'm finding, at least in FF2us.)

8 times huh? Hmmm. The only difference between the SNES version and GBA version is that the GBA version doesn't force you into uselessness  while using Spirit and allows FuSoYa to use his turn doing something more useful after the initial Spirit cast.

Recall targets all enemies, regardless if the original spell is able to target all enemies.

My guess is that the Twin command is tied to the twins themselves. There perhaps is a bit to denote their dependency on each other for the command to operate properly.

I'm pretty sure there are a few enemies x4 weak vs. aerial.  I'll double check.

EDIT: Yup, tons of enemies x4 weak vs. aerial.  Quite a lot of undead x4 weak vs. holy: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/522596/5494

I use that document religiously, but the some missing enemy data in conjunction with some of the missing equipment data makes some of his enemy analysis incomplete...

Although, Darkness was never used a significant multiplier (4x)....
