Best Genesis games?
« on: November 21, 2007, 04:26:09 PM »
I was never really a big fan of the Genesis, or a fan at all actually, my game collection for it was the smallest out of the consoles I've ever owned. Anyway, even with emulation I've never given it much of a chance, I'm thinking about doing so now via my DS and jEnesisDS. I'd just like a list of what to get and what to avoid.

Unfortunately, the entire collection of every Genesis game I've ever played is short:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Knuckles
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic Spinball

I never owned a Genesis, so every game I played on the console were the ones that King Lettuce owned before he sold the thing.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

Yeah, the Sonic games were pretty much all I owned too, I had a few other games but I can't even remember what they were anymore.

Robocop VS. The Terminator is one of my all time favorites for the system. Completely different compared to the SNES version. Land Stalker is good as well, along with Gunstar Heroes.

And you must play Streets of Rage 2. One of the best beat 'em ups of all time.

I played a bit of PS2, wasn't my type of RPG, too much level griding. Is PS4 better in that regard?

Shining Force
Shining in the Darkness
Sword of Vermillion (my favorite)
Anything with Sonic in the title
Bare Knuckle / Streets of Rage series

That's all I can think of at the moment.

a lot of genesis games are arcade ports so the arcade versions are still better. such as

afterburner
altered beast
golden axe
shinobi
hang on
outrun
space harrier
mortal kombat 1 2 3
street fighter 2

then there are console originals like

ristar
streets of rage
sonic
gunstar heroes
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Ranger X
Ecco the Dolphin
Lightening Force
Contra Hard Corp
Castlevania Bloodlines
Batman and Robin
LHX Attack Chopper
Red Zone

I gotta go, more to come.

Sub-Terrania
Sword of Vermillion
Phantasy Star 1-4
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force 1+2
Super Hydlide
Ys
D&D
Lunar the Silver Star
Lunar Eternal Blue
Monster World IV
Sonic CD
Final Fight CD
Silpeed
Snatcher
Popful Mail
Shining Force CD
Dark Wizard
Rise of the Dragon
Thunder Strike
Soul Star
Terminator
Wolf Child
WonderDog
BC Racers
Batman Returns CD

Okay, that's enough suggestions for now, I haven't even finished downloading half the ones listed in I.S.T.'s post. I'll give some very short reviews of what I've played so far:

Altered Beast: Only played for a few minutes, didn't really like it.
Castlevania Bloodlines: Already played this one before, not my favorite CV but a good one.
Comix Zone: I'm really enjoying this one but it doesn't run too good in jEnesisDS, I think I'll play through it in Fusion.
Contra Hard Corps: Seems better than any of the other Contras I've played but I suck at it just as bad.
Cool Spot: One of my friends rented this when it first came out and we really liked it, I'm not seeing the appeal now.
Golden Axe: Not nearly as good as I remember.
Rocket Knight Adventures: This is one of the ones I owned and forgot about it. I used to be pretty good at it, not so much now, need to practice.
Streets of Rage: I'm not usually a fan of this genre but this one seems good, I'm going to keep playing it.
Vectorman: This one's good, I unlocked it in Sonic Gems Collection.
Vectorman 2: Ditto.

Sparkster
Virtua Racing Deluxe
Shadow Squadron
T-Mek
NBA Jam
Knuckles Chaotix
Star Wars Arcade
Doom
Virtua Fighter
Kolibri
Revenge of Shinobi
Ghouls N Ghosts
Super Monaco GP
Strider
Shadow Dancer
ToeJam & Earl
Earthworm Jim 1 + 2
Aladdin
Double Dragon games
Galaxy Force II
Eternal Champions
NHL '94
Hard Drivin’
Race Drivin’
F15 Strike Eagle
Pitfall: The mayan adventure
Virtua Fighter 2
Sonic 3D Blast

get the 32X and Sega CD versions of games if you can as they are usually superior.

Man, Comix Zone is hard. Harder than Contra: Hard Corps, IMO.

Of course, I never even bothered to beat Contra without cheats, so I could be wrong...

Streets of Rage 2 is infinitely better than SOR1. It's just got better game balance, graphics, music, etc. In almost every single way it is superior.
