Title: FF4A "Resistance" Descriptions
Post by: Deathlike2 on December 06, 2007, 07:42:22 AM
In some of the equipment you can buy at Mysidia, they are described as having certain protection against ghouls and undead.
Are these actual resistances or BS descriptions?
Note: Some of the Crystal equipment also has such descriptions, so it's not just a random question.
If these resistances are real though, do they also apply to FF2/4?

They're actual resistances. In FF4, just as weapons can have bonus damage against certain monster races, armors can likewise have bonus defense against certain races.

I presume it is a specific damage reduction factor? (50% most likely..?)
Are those that I have listed the only ones or are there more (and perhaps some that haven't been used...?)

Armor can have the following resistances: Dragons, machines, reptiles, spirits, giants, flans, mages, and undead. No armor resists machines or flans so those can be considered unused. The resistance causes a 75% reduction in damage.

Before I make my guesses, but why the hell isn't any of this documented? (I've posed similar questions prior to this, such as weapons that work against Flans.)
The "best" last known documentation of this game was Ben Siron's FF2 info from way back, but even that is simply incomplete.
Lemme guess the equipment that have the resistances...
Dragons: Kain's Dragon Armor set Reptiles: Ice Shield/Armor? (it is that or the Fire Shield/Armor) Spirits: Mythril Armor set plus Silver Ring (as stated by FF4A's info) Giants: Zeus Gloves (or whatever they are called).. perhaps the Power Armband and/or Power Suit? Mages: Rune Rings Undead: Crystal Shield+Gloves, "Paladin equipment set"
Does that sound about right?

I thought the Artemis Bow+Avenger fell into the Spirit catagory...
The Dummy is what?

A two-handed copy of the Crystal Sword that no one can equip. J2e called it "Spare" in their FF4 translation.

A small FF4A info post:
Lightbringer is effective against both Undead+Spirits Hand of the Gods (Yang's Claw) is effective against both Undead+Spirits
There are other a couple obvious documented ones, such as Apollo's Harp and Dragon Claw... Mist Whip and Asura's Rod doesn't seem to have any extra attributes other than being Holy elemental. I'm unsure about some of the other weapons such as Triton's Dagger, Loki's Lute, Perseus's Bow/Arrows...
Edit: Flandango has a "description" of being a Holy Sword, but fails to even have be a Holy elemental.... Triton's Dagger could have been anti-Reptile, but it isn't...

Holy shit! :wtf: :omg:
Loki's Lute is truly the ultimate Lute... (too bad it was bugged in v1.0).
It doesn't include an elemental (which is good IMO), but it has 7 of 8 possible monster type attributes attached to it ! Too bad that doesn't include the Flan, but that's pretty damn good.
Also, Perseus's Bow/Arrows has no special attribute... and neither is Porom's specific staffs (though, I didn't do thorough testing of it).

What was the bug?

The FF4A Jap 1.0 version and the US version of FF4 has a number of bugs which have been corrected in the Jap 1.1 version and the Euro version.
One of these bugs are equipment attributes, specifically weapons. For instance, the Mist Whip is supposed to have the Holy attribute, but it doesn't in the buggy version. Also, the Dragon Claw is supposed to be effective against Dragons, but obviously wasn't the case in the buggy version.
Loki's Lute apparently was supposed to be much more powerful than it was... w/o the enemy attribute annihilation power, it is a mediocre "ultimate harp". With the number of enemies that have a specific enemy attribute to take advantage of (which means 4x damage for matching enemy type with the weapon), the weapon is significantly stronger that originally thought.

Does the Killer Bow have any special attributes? It's FF4A description says that it increases the chance for critical hits...

Nothing except long range, the normal bow property, and the aerial property. Oddly the ElvenBow and Samurai Bow have the use as item bit, but no magic set to use. Do you have a save with either of those weapons? I'm going to see if I can get them to cast magic by giving them a spell.

Elven Bow casts Shell. I don't think the Samurai Bow casts anything.

Shell explains it then, the Lunar Staff is the same way in FF2us, they took the spell away but left the use as item bit set. I'm still curious about the Samurai Bow.

Really, the Samurai Bow does nothing.. unless you trace it or something. There is no effect as far as I can tell.
The only other dummied effect that isn't quite written out in FF2 is Protect via Murasame+Defense Sword.

That's not what I mean, I know it does nothing, I'm curious if setting a spell for it will work. Remember, I don't know how the game determines which weapons can use magic, setting this bit and giving them a spell usually isn't enough to get them working unless they were set up to use magic originally. If the Samurai Bow can cast a spell when I assign one to it it's proof that it was originally intended to use something. I think I have a save here with the Samurai Bow, so I'm going to test real quick.
Edit: Negative in FF2us. I'll give it a try in FF4 later.

Food for thought. You can somewhat test for weapon/armor attributes/resistances by attacking yourself.
For instance, Kain will have a hard time killing himself with the Dragoon Spear while equipped with any of the Dragoon set equipped.. yet he will do more damage against himself with the White Spear.

How's this change/test going?

Same result, doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if maybe they just set the bit by accident.
