Imzogelmo's "Shadow Leaves One-Man Party" patch
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:49:52 AM »
Hi everyone! I remember saying a while back that I wanted to make an alternate fix for the event bug that allows Shadow to leave the party in Narshe even if he's the only member, thereby freezing the game. Imzogelmo's patch is great, but I think my fix would be a bit more puristic. I plan to make my fix by modifying Imzogelmo's patch to make my solution work, but after taking a close-up look, I've noticed a few changes made by the patch that aren't mentioned in the documentation. Here's what I see:

  • C4/0434, C4/0439, C4/043E: These appear to be somehow related to event triggers/pointers, which I guess needed to be updated to accommodate movement of one or more functions.
  • C4/7054, C4/705D, C4/70D2: Magic data...? Um, what? What does that have to do with this?
  • CF/3E4F: According to Lord J's offset list, this apparently has to do with some enemy's "Control" commands list. Again, what? Why would you have to change that in order to fix this event?

I don't know if Imzogelmo used a program that made the patch based solely on the differences between ROMs with and without the fix, and accidentally included too much, but whatever it is, I can only see some of this stuff as being out of place. I need clarification.

So, I found out what those other changes were for, and indeed they have nothing to do with the bug the patch fixes. In addition to fixing the bug, the patch will modify a couple of the properties of the spells Sun Bath and El Nino, and add Sun Bath to the Control commands list for the enemy HadesGigas. Why that was included in his patch is beyond me, but...you've been warned.

Hoi. :3

Wow. That's an excellent find. I'll need to update my patches.

How much of what you listed is unnecessary for the bug fix, if you'd please? Is the C4/0434, C4/0439, C4/043E portion needed?

EDIT: Err. My mistake for looking in the wrong place. I checked the documentation and it accounts for everything except the changes to the spells and Control. Thanks for all your hard work, by the way.

:wtf: I have no idea how some stray bytes got changed. Good find on that.

5/31/16 - I have an assembly of the battle portion of C2, relocated to the F0 bank, which has both vanilla and patch code in my dropbox. I'll be updating it with additional patches as I have time. I will *not* be releasing it publicly, but ask me for the link and I'll share.

So, I think I should make a new version of this patch with the stray bytes removed. However, Leet Sketcher's idea of letting Shadow leave and throwing you to the party selection screen seems like a good idea also. So, perhaps it would be a good idea to take both ideas and merge them?

In the event that Shadow is the only character at that point, maybe give a selection dialogue, whereby the player can stay with Shadow (and thus be dumped back out of the town as my patch does) or they can let Shadow leave and be thrown to a party selection screen in Narshe. It seems like the best of both worlds: give the player the power to choose which way they go.

I think that's an interesting idea and an ambitious project. I personally am not interested in taking it on myself because I think it's a bit redundant, and the reason is because those two options only exist in the first place because someone chooses one of our two patches to apply, meaning that the choice is already theirs.
