Does anyone know the value that needs to be modified for me to do this? I imagine it can't be much more complicated than that (right)?

I added my desired starting actor (Edward) during the opening events then changed the character shown then removed Cecil from the party before the screen loads. Seems to work for me pretty well! (I'm going by memory, I can't get to my laptop with the rom right now. If it doesn't work I can check it later if you want)
Though I'm sure there's a better way to do it through direct editing.
Also, I'm starting from the ground up so I don't have to deal with my desired starting character not showing up in events.

Speaking about Changing Starting/Defult Actor, you can have the pony that represents Yang take over Kain's place for Filly Fantasy IV in the beginning of the game.
