The FF5 Ancient Cave hacking project
« on: December 07, 2014, 12:11:16 PM »
Final Fantasy V: Ancient Cave is a major hack for FF5.

Quote
This hack implements Lufia 2?s Ancient Cave on top of Final Fantasy V. Use one of the saves on the included SRAM to gain access to it. This hack is currently completely in Japanese but an English translation is in the works.

It has occured to me that this hack has incredible potential. It can be used as a base for all sorts of challenges and gamemodes. Imagine being able to change items, monsters, shops and more!

Anyway, this thread is for discussion around the technical aspects of the FF5 Ancient Cave hack.

I love FF5 Ancient Cave, I've never been able to beat it though I've gotten pretty far but eventually the enemy's just start to outclass you in every way.

As I recall though it doesn't fix any glitches and for some reason contains an unused copy of the Lunar Subterrane from FFIV. I think the amount of random rooms should be increased, it seems like there's maybe... 30-35 in Ancient Cave, I think it could easily be double that.

I've actually cleared it once. It only took what, 9 hours?

Yeah there's that final stage from FF4 that doesn't seem to have anything in it. I'm guessing it was meant to be the final stage that was never finished. I agree about the rooms, I think I once got the same map 4 times in a row. There is no reason why it shouldn't be possible to increase it, there is plenty of space. The ROM is actually expanded all the way up to 4MB.

There is a ton of custom stuff going on with this piece of work though, respawning treasures, random treasures (are the treasures randomly placed on level, or is it "can get anything at anytime?" It seemed I got better weapons later, but at other times I could get really powerful stuff (Crystal Armor) on early floors.

The Rom's expanded? I thought due to there being less maps there would be the normal amount of space. I take it we aren't dealing with silly map limits like FFIV has, are we?

I pondered how to do this with FFIV, but FFIV is not a very... freeform game, I guess you could say and trying to set up a random warp is a lot more work than I thought it would be.

The treasures are definitely "can get anything at anytime". You can find World 3 equipment at the very first floor if you are lucky. There does not seem to be any change in probabilities throughout the game.

I have no idea about map limits in FF5. It seems you can actually play through FF5 normally on an Ancient Cave patched ROM, so perhaps not.

If I understand this right, the english patch translation of this Ancient Cave doesn't actually translate anything outside of the game. So if I wanted to apply other patches, how do I go about doing this? The RPGe patch, then the spooniest one, then the ancient cave, then the ancient cave translation? The other patches, I am guessing, is going to be tricky to see how they interact with the Cave patch.

I haven't heard of this hack until I read this topic literally just now.  So this literally picks random; maps, treasure, jobs, magic, items, and monsters but doesn't actually have any NEW data (beyond event editing looks like)?  I'm finding a hard time locating the actual log of what has changed and I didn't do the Ancient Cave in Lufia 2 so I feel so clueless.  LOL

It imports a few things from FF4, and many maps have been altered by adding new chests (some of them are hidden). It's a great hack, you really ought to try it.

 :edit:
I forgot. There are a bunch of new weapons and armor from FF5a.

That won't work. The Ancient Cave patch uses space from E0/0000 to FF/FFFF. RPGe's translation uses E0/0000-E7/FFFF. The english translation of Ancient cave is actually fundamentally different from that of RPGe in that it uses little or no space after E0/0000. You cannot combine FF5AC and RPGe's translation without extensive hacking and modification.
