Was that with or without the delta patch?
I used just this patch:
http://slickproductions.org/forum/index.php?topic=1975.msg21658#msg21658
Hmmm... Can you try these changes?

C2/8101 : 1E -> 1D
C2/811F : EA -> 7B
I did it, and it works now!

I'm going to play some Ancient Cave today; I figured I may as well test your fractional M patch while I'm at it. This is the most recent one I found:
http://slickproductions.org/forum/index.php?topic=1975.msg21658#msg21658

I can't use the compilation patch since Ancient Cave is not compatible with it.

 :edit:
It seems to have some issues. Faris wielding Dagger attacks Lenna without any armor = 0 damage.

 :edit:
It's not just the Dagger, the Thunder Whip is the same. I'm guessing all knife based weapons do 0 damage.

We may need to note which patches are compatible with only the Japanese version, come to think of it, right?
Referring to your earlier suggestion:
Also, I have a suggestion on the patches pages -

Can we list what bytes the patches changes so that you can see what patches overlap, if any, there are? That way you can show the 'compilation' against that.
Doing that would help immensely.

 :edit:
I added a bunch of patches to the list, for completion.

I don't know about having 0 HP at level ~27.  I would at least have a negatively proportional amount each level up but at some point you'll need to cap it at a set low amount.  250~350 has a good ring to it.
How about inversely proportional?
HP =  9999/Level
MP = 999/Level

It would prevent the HP/MP from ever reaching zero, and it would be challenging even at low levels.

Tell me more... so you say that lowered parameters don't hinder really much your run?
Not at all. All my attacks did ~1000 damage.

I don't think I'm going to keep playing like this. It just seems senseless to have a challenge that doesn't start right away.

I had the rune patch attached to the goblin punch fix / knife fix, but I can't seem to edit the site, as I don't have permission. Trying to create an account just keeps looping me back to the login for the forums.
I had that problem as well. It works with Firefox. What browser are you using?

I'll have a look at this. Do I need a ROM with a header?

 :edit:
Yep, turns out I do.

 :edit:
I gave it a quick spin. It's an interesting challenge, but incredibly easy! I went straigth up to level 50 and now I just steamroll literally everything.

I hope you don't mind, but I merged the FF5 docs and patches wiki pages for simplicity. Right now there is just 1 page for everything related to FF5 hacking. Don't hesitate to add things to it!  :wink:

Since you have made so much progress on the fractional M patch, why not update its wiki page?

General Discussion / Re: Wiki thread

Finally we have a wiki, but I seem to be the only one contributing.  :hmm:

Can we get some more wiki themes? I'd like a dark one that's easier on the eyes.

 :edit:
Apparently some users still cannot log in.

 :edit:
It seems all you need is to do a complete reinstall of your browser. Still, this issue should be fixed.

I still feel like thief is underrated compared to IV and VI, and it seems odd that they get lowered so drastically for V. I wouldn't really want to play it on its own, as when I steal, I then just switch to fight the rest of the way (like with Locke)
Let me first point out that Edge is a Ninja, not a Thief.

Thieves in FF5 are actually very useful:
- They benefit greatly from the Brawl ability (I do this all the time)
- A high Agility stat means they will act sooner in battle, so they are very likely to get their turn before the monsters
- Full Moon and Rising Sun are back row weapons, which is great defense
- Innate Caution means you will never be attacked from behind
- Steal with Thief Glove
- Always dash and see hidden passages

They have so many good points it only seems fair to give them weak attacks. If you want a powerful Thief you can use the Brawl ability (double damage) and Full Moon/Rising Sun from the back row.

by "retaining balance", i meant have similar capabilities between the weapon types, i.e. similar damage ranges.
so this weapon would favor Thieves..  don't high-Strength jobs already have weapons that favor them (or are outright exclusive to them)?
Sword based weapons and knife based weapons are already quite well balanced. Early in the game, knives and swords do similar damage (Dagger equals Broad Sword, Mythril Sword beats Mythril Knife, but Guardian knife beats both). Swords are generally more powerful, but knives are more reliable (accurate).

Late game, sword based weapons do much more damage than knives, but knives have special traits (instakill, steal while attacking, chance to evade, bonus damage to humans). This reminds me, the ManEater knife is technically a sword based weapon.

Your suggested fix would make knives much less useful for warrior jobs. Thieves would get a damage boost, but I would argue that they don't need it. Thieves are mainly used for stealing or their numerous innate abilities.

Windhex has an option to compare two files and show the differences.

Out of curiousity, is it fair to offer a 'compiled' patch here?

By which I mean, I was thinking of the 'fixes' so far, as well as the translation patches (the original, and the addendum).
I see nothing wrong with that.

Also, I have a suggestion on the patches pages -

Can we list what bytes the patches changes so that you can see what patches overlap, if any, there are? That way you can show the 'compilation' against that.
That's a good idea, why not add it to the pages?

194
Sure, go ahead! I will be using the "Discussion" sub-page for feedback and further suggestions.

I have also written these pages so far:
http://slickproductions.org/slickwiki/index.php/Final_Fantasy_V_Patches
http://slickproductions.org/slickwiki/index.php/User:Jorgur

It's all still kind of rough, unpolished, but we can improve it over time.

I just wrote a page on the fractional M patch in the wiki:
http://slickproductions.org/slickwiki/index.php/FF5_Patch:Fractional_M

If you decide to make more patches you could add them to the page.
