There's a new version of this out now. Amusingly, I was reading this thread just a few minutes before I checked the submissions queue at RHDN and saw the update.

there's (still) no readme with the file.  is there a list anywhere of what's changed?

i mean, i can open the file in editors throughout the game, but i'd like a summation of it.

:edit:

seems to be a problem with the vargas/gilgamesh battle.  he just keeps using gale cut and i can;t target him at all to cause damage.  i figured i would outlast him and it would be fine, but nothing happens after quite awhile.  anyone else experiencing this problem?

I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say.

Your movie needs sound. And this is a matter of a missing AI command. Normally when both Ipooh die in the Vargas battle, they set him to be retargetable. Enkidu didn't do that. This battle unwinnable.

i know it does.  i can't get camtasia to pick up the sound on my computer for some reason.  there's a good guide over at something awful in the lp forum, but i was just making a quick video, so i didn't bother.

aaanywho, any easy way for me to fix that so i can keep going? i appreciate the insight.

Easiest way:

Open up FF3usME, scroll down to Enkidu, enter the AI. If there is an FC 12 00 00, add this after that line:
FB 06 30 (there's a chance Gilgamesh is monster 2 instead of one, if this still doesn't work try FB 06 31).

If there is no FC 12 00 00 line, add it after the first FF.

That should do it.

Also, since you're using Snes9x, why not use the Record AVI feature it has?

there's an FC 12 06 00.

and i forgot it even had that feature.  i usually just use zsnes.  snes9x got used this time because it's easier to use quickly from a thumb drive than zsnes is.  there's no window within a window with a different mouse, etc - i don't have to hit esc to stop the game and go into the interface, etc.  much easier for quick use if i have a few minutes to kill.

:edit:

works beautifully.  thanks!

only problem is that the guy really fucked up the text.  the same texts just scrolls over and over again causing little glitches outside the left and right of the text box. the same speech between vargas and sabin keeps playing(his edited version, anyway) thoughout the climactic duel as well as right after .  looks kinda odd, but doesn't crash the game.

there's an FC 12 06 00.
"If monster's 2 and 3 are dead"

Open up FF3usME and find that formation, and find out which slots Gilgamesh and Enkidu take. Once you do, change this FC to which ever slot Enkidu takes up (FC 12 00 00 also works, cause that's "If self is dead").

I took a look at this hack and thought "This would be a decent hack." but now that I see that its riddled with bugs and without any major changes, I may not play it.

you can't advance past the beginning of the returner hideout without hitting that infinite loop.  too bad, because the earlier versions worked fine.

One of the few things I'd hope most hack-makers do is test their own stuff... at least one full playthrough. That way, you can fix/tweak whatever is wrong.

The problem though is that it extends to those doing translations... especially if beta testers miss them. It bothers me that noone pays attention to detail these days. They are all caught up in the story, but not with the gameplay... it then becomes a pain in the ass IMO.

Yeah, especially in this case, since the hack was already so bugged to begin with. You don't even need to do a full playthrough if you're just making fixes, load up a savestate from the area you're editing and make sure everything works. It's not hard, I do it all the time.
