Gird/Endure Behavior
« on: February 09, 2008, 01:35:35 AM »
I probably should test this on my next runthrough of FF4 (the original), but Gird is a very simple command...

Casts the equivalent of Protect on Yang's self (in other words, a self targeting command).

However, while testing the Barrier status... I made Yang use Gird while going against a Wicked Mask... and for some reason this spell is reflected. Under other normal circumstances, a Reflect spell generated by the Items or the allied spell of Reflect works fine.

I'm not sure what actually happens.. but the magic effect never hit the Wicked Mask... so perhaps it was simply nullified.

Stupid FF4A bug. Occurs on all FF4A versions.

The spell Protect is not guarenteed to work unless you have enough Will/Spirit... although it is unknown how much you need to be sure it works.

Since Yang normally has 3 Will/Spirit, it is guarenteed that the chance of it working will be the same... unless perhaps his Will is maxed.... I will have to test this.

An important update:

Endure/Gird in both versions behave the same... for the most part...

Apparently this command is reflectable (since Protect is reflectable).. whether it is by an enemy's Reflect or an ally's Reflect. There is a difference though..

In the SNES version, it gets reflected and hits the enemy. In the GBA version, it gets reflected and appears to hit nothing.

When this command is executed, the resulting stance may imply defending, but that is simply not the case.

Protect is definately reliant on Will/Spirit.. which I'll make a separate post on this... unfortunately this translates into success rate of the command.

This command always fails when the character is under Silence. The fact that this command "casts" a spell is the reason.

This command ignores Silence status in FF4A.

Since Gird casts Protect, it's related to the information here:

I forgot to post the location of the spell casted by Gird/Endure when I was researching commands a few weeks ago. The spell casted is at 1E882 (FF2us ROM with header). The value there should be 05, which refers to the spell number for the command.

1) Is this command's success rate determined by the spell's hit rate or not?

2) If it is dictated by the spell's hit rate, I assume it is affected by the slot 1 rule?

3) If is isn't dictated by the spell's hit rate, what's the success rate then?

I get the feeling it uses the spell's hit rate, since I've tested this spell's success by tweaking Yang's Will Power (which is what the spell is based on).

The command simply casts the spell, so the command's hit rate (and power if you change the spell to something else) is dependent upon the spell's hit rate/power.

 :bump:

Like FF4A, the WSC version won't always allow Gird/Endure to work while Yang is under Reflect.

However, there is an amusing bug that comes with Reflect.

What happens next with Reflect and Gird depends on the previously casted spell in the battle (whether by monster or you guys).

If the last spell that was cast is affected by Reflect (usually the Reflect spell you put on Yang), the sound of that spell is played as part of the "reflected spell" effect.
In the case of Reflect being the last spell cast, you hear the sound of "reflect" instead of the Protect/Gird.

If the last spell that was cast is NOT affected by Reflect (like Scan or Sight), Gird "ignores" the Reflect effect and it is seemingly applied on Yang.

Go figure.
