Olympics officially begin in under 24 hours
« on: August 08, 2008, 01:36:58 AM »
The question is, do any of us care? Are there any compelling story lines to the games this year other than the smog and the pollution and the oppression? :hmm:

I, for one, will be watching the highlites on ESPN, since the division races seem to be more interesting at the moment. There's also preseason football!

I'm not a big fan of the Olympics, but I'd have watched the martial arts competitions if the damn thing wasn't being held is China.

Nothing against the Chinese people. Their fucking government is shit, however. I can't believe Canada(I'm a native Texan, BTW) was passed up in favor of a nation with one of the worst human rights records around. I wonder if the next one will be held in Darfur or Zimbabwe?

I'll probably watch very little of it.  The Chinese government's behavior is a bit of a deterrent.  Though mostly, it's because the Olympics annoy me.  The broadcasters will spend all that time on the grandeur and the majesty of everything, rambling about how such-and-such event is some "hallowed" competition.  Even if that event consists of swinging from a bar with chalk on your hands, or grunting and spinning and heaving some iron ball.  Then they'll inevitably have rags-to-better-rags or weakling-to-powerhouse stories about some of the athletes.  Maybe they were an orphan who watched their parents die, maybe they were born with one leg 20% shorter than the other, or maybe the only way they could feed their piss-poor families and fulfill necessary protein requirements was by the prodigiously fast 5-year-old chasing and hunting giant sewer rats down dark alleys.

If these competitions are so hallowed, and they're the "pinnacle" of everything physical and spiritual, why can viewers only tolerate watching them once every four years?!  It's because they're boring as all hell, that's why.  You know, watching Glidden paint dry on a properly lit surface, is just ... breathtaking.

When a dog runs in a circle chasing its tail, it's laughable.  Yet when a person runs in a circle in blue spandex, they're poetry in motion.  Please.

Screw the Olympics.

As for preseason football, waay too early for me.  Baseball's not even done yet.  Particularly as a Cubs fan, I have zero interest in football now.  Kind of like how I had no interest in April baseball, seemingly right after the football playoffs had ended.  There needs to be a (bigger) gap.

They're good to watch on the days that you can't get any baseball games in, because...
1: Your team isn't playing, so no local coverage.
2: You can't watch any other games, because of retarded FCC rules which make absolutely no sense.

So yeah, football! :childish:

i wonder how much of that is the FCC, and how much is MLB looking for ways to squeeze every last penny out of viewers.

I don't believe there are rules.. rather it has to do with advertising and broadcasting everything else on the web.
