Final Fantasy 5
« on: June 14, 2009, 07:02:25 PM »
So, it's deep dark secret time. I've never completed a play through of ff5. Crazy right? It and 12 are the only ones I've never finished.

Curious which version is the definitive version to use to play through it. Something I can do on a portable system. So I guess, which is better, psx (since I can throw it on my psp) or gba. Wasn't sure about the gba version seeing as 4a and 6a had all kinds of issues. If I recall, the E versions did manage to fix some of the US version problems as well didn't it?

GBA, definitely. FF5A is the one port that Square did (TOSE did everything else). FF6A was pretty much ok, nothing bad, nothing great. FF4A had mondo issues that the euro version fixed.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

Does it matter if I grab the Euro or US version for 5? I remember how horrible ff4a was. ff6a had some quirks but nothing I couldn't overlook.

Haven't played the euro version of FF5A, so I can't speak to that. The US should be plenty good enough.

The US version has a nicer menu font, the EU version fixed one or two minor issues that I don't even remember anymore. I'm fairly certain TOSE did all of the GBA ports, including FF5, they just happened to get that game right (I think they did a good job with FF1, FF2, and FF6 as well, though 6 could've been better).

6 had major slow down and color issues out the ass, if my sister's playing it on an emulator is any indication.

Is the cart different?

I don't remember any major slowdown, it was a bit slower than the original (but so was FF5). The color was messed up pretty bad in a few places, FF1-5 all seemed to have a more vibrant palette, while FF6 ended up really faded out looking in places. It could be because FF6 used a darker palette to begin with, I doubt someone went through and enhanced every palette by hand in the first four. From the little bit of GBA dev I've done, I know the homebrew compilers have brightness correction options built-in, I highly doubt the professional ones don't (which also explains why quite a few GBA ports suffer from the same thing).

I had been porting the SNES palettes over to the GBA version not to long after the Japanese release, but I lost interest in working on it. The faded colors were never enough to bother me.

You want the Euro version.

The major fix IMO that is addressed is Reset/Return not working for timed areas. I forget if there's any major differences. Oh yea, X-Fight on Exdeath's final forms will always work perfectly.. since there are no dummy "undead" spots on him. However, you will find that occuring with the Enuo (I presume those changes are intentional).

It's actually amazing that they did actually do a good job in this port (balance and difficulty), despite the new stuff isn't very interesting.
