Firefox users, dig this
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:59:48 PM »
Have I ever mentioned that Adobe Flash is a blight on the Internet and a cancer on humanity?

Yet it's not sensible to disable entirely, because there *are* a handful of pages with Flash videos that I want to view regularly.  And frequently turning the plug-in on and off isn't convenient, nor does it address pages that have a bunch of garbage ads and one worthwhile video.

After a few failed Google searches in the past, I finally found what I sought today!  Flashblock:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

This thing is godly.  And very flexible; you can instantly enable the flash animations you want on a page just by clicking on them.  Finally some rest for my computer.

Maybe this is old news for those of you who use Firefox more often (I actually use primarily IE6, for no good reason), but thought I'd mention it if only to celebrate its awesomeness.

Flashblock!!

I thought adblock did some form of that. Whatever.. Flash needs an off feature to be configured... ESPECIALLY for sound.

"CONGRATS, YOU WON A NINTENDO WII!!!!!!" freaking shouts over my speakers needlessly at some websites. These ad makers need to DIE DIE DIE! :banonsmash:

I've been using it for some time now, I held off on it for a long time because I thought Adblock Plus alone was enough, but Flashblock does it a lot better.

I've been using it for some time now,

when using it, have you ever encountered browser windows with multiple flash "placeholders" slowing down a lot or hanging?  some people on the plug-in's comment webpage have experienced that..  i have, too, if i keep firefox running for awhile, but it may be entirely unrelated to Flashblock (the computer i'm using it on has pathetic RAM size, so i had the hanging before i installed it).  also, some commenters suggested this would happen on Firefox 3.x, but not on 2.x; i dunno what you're running.

I'm running 3.0.6 and I've never experienced any real slowdown when using it. It's possible I just don't go to sites with enough flash content to notice it.

I've always just used NoScript. Does the same thing, plus blocks all other scripts till you enable them on a site by site basis

I believe I've had this flashblock for a long time. I never had the link to share it with anyone because I followed a link someone else posted in another forum a long time ago and didn't think to save it.

It' IS wonderful. In fact, using any other computer makes me realize just how much crap there really is among some of my favorite websites.
