i was surprised the Packers went for it on 4th and 5 early in the fourth quarter.  Rodgers ended up losing 6 yards on a sack, and giving the Giants great field position.  there were still 13 minutes left to play, the Packers were only down by 7 points, and 5 yards isn't exactly a short distance, so punting seemed the obvious tactic.  New York hadn't scored a point for over one quarter, so it's not like their offense was on fire.  going for it on the NY 39 showed the Packers' coaches' lack of faith in their defense (arguably deserved), unless they trying to catch the Giants off-guard?  anyway, it turned out to be a big momentum shifter because New York got great field position, promptly drove into Green Bay territory, and scored a field goal.

It seemed like the Pack were trying to catch the Giants off guard a few times, and it never worked.

In the context of the Packers game, the entire team played like complete shit. You can find plausible reasons like not starting Rodgers on Week 17 or the sad incident with the o-coordinator's son.

However, watching a Hail Mary succeed is all one needed to see why this team failed. Plus the obvious abundance of turnovers. Rodgers and that offense simply did not play in sync. Packers couldn't really muster up much of a pass rush w/o blitzing either.

Yay?

Pats - This is not the 09 game... it should be close nonetheless.

Giants - I want the 49ers to win, but the regular season game is probably not exactly indicative... and the Packers did implode quite a bit w/o the Giants help IMO.

New England over Baltimore, 25-22

with an easier schedule, New England is comparatively untested.  sure, they were a very good 7 for 9 against teams who were 8-8 or better, similar to Baltimore's 8 for 10.  but when you raise the bar to opponents 9-7 or better, the Ravens were an impressive 6 for 7, while the Patriots were a weak 0-2 (albeit with a small sample size).

but on the other hand, New England is dominant at home, and Baltimore is a lackluster 4-4 on the road.  the Patriots' 9-game winning streak, while against nobody over 8-8, does underline how consistently they're executing as of late, which makes a repeat of the Jets playoff game last year seem unlikely to me.  New England's defense is okay against the rush, which is the Ravens' strength, so i'm not _terribly_ worried about their horrible passing defense here.

^ note that the Slick server's clock is 10 MINUTES fast now, so my pick was actually submitted 8 minutes *before* the 3pm ET kickoff.

edit: they started several minutes after 3:00, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

San Francisco over New York, 25-21

the Giants have had some impressive games, particularly last week.  they had a winning record in a tough schedule.  still, the 49ers' defense is downright smothering, particularly at home.  i'm uncomfortable picking against New York three weeks in a row now, much as i'm sure NFL teams are uncomfortable playing against them.  but there's just too much from this season in San Fran's favor for me not to choose them.

in a bold call, i think the 49ers will outrun the Giants, and New York will out-pass San Francisco. :P

The 49'er/Giants game was actually kind of refreshing, because it was a bit of a defensive struggle, but at the same time it was "why the hell didn't the 49'ers convert a 3rd down all game?" and "wow, the offenses are kind of offensive right now."

Patriots can probably taste some revenge, at least whoever is left from 2007.

Ravens were one of the best defensive teams left, so what happened made some sense (except for the Vegas spread). Brady made some terrible decisions and he wasn't really rushed, which didn't help much. I give credit to the Ravens for doing practically everything to win, but the Pats (specifically the defense) did just enough to stop them from winning.

On the other hand, I'm not sure exactly why Alex Smith looked so bad. Although, both defensive lines owned the line of scrimmage... so it made some sense how that game went. I wonder if it has a lot to do with how the offense runs and/or Alex Smith. You usually don't win games when you don't convert on 3rd down... but the key difference in that game was turnovers.
