  • Self-Randomizing Mods

For our Hall of Modders of these mods, see here.

This page covers mods known as being able to randomize themselves. That is, no website or application is needed to get or play a new seed. Instead, resetting the game is enough.

    Comprehensive

The first list requires all of vanilla content to remain accessible.

    1. The Battle of Olympus: Item Randomizer (NES)+ [link]
    2. Final Fantasy VI: Tailwind (SNES)+ [link]
    3. Final Fantasy V: Whirlwind (SFC)+ [link]
    4. Final Fantasy IV: Downwind (SFC)+ [link]
    5. Final Fantasy III: Crosswinds (FC) [link]
    6. Final Fantasy II: Upwind (FC)+ [link]
    7. Final Fantasy: Headwind (NES) [link]
    8. Super Mario 64: Randomizer (N64) [link]
    9. Pokémon Emerald: Party Randomizer (GBA) [link]
    10. Pokémon Emerald Inexperienced (GBA) [link]
    11. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones: Self-Randomizing ROM (GBA) [link]
    12. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones: Andaron Saga: Randomizer (GBA) [link]
    13. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones: Self-Randomizer (GBA)+ [link]
    14. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword: Self-Randomizer (GBA)+ [link]
    15. Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade: Self-Randomizer (GBA)+ [link]
    16. Advance Wars 2: Self-Randomizer (GBA) [link]
    17. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night [link]

A plus (+) if a vanilla mode can be readily toggled on, effectively converting the mod into a QoL and/or rebalancing mod that is unrandomized.

    Roguelike

A separate list is maintained for roguelike mods in the style of Lufia’s Ancient Cave.

    1. The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Dungeon (NES) [link]
    2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: Winter Festive 2020: Advent CalenDoor (SNES) [link]
    3. Final Fantasy V: Ancient Cave (SFC) [link]
    4. Final Fantasy V Advance: Ancient Cave (GBA) [link]

The significance of a roguelike mod in the randomizer context is that a bulk of the content normally associated with a vanilla playthrough is rendered unplayable either completely or in the context of interoperability with the hack’s twist on the game.

If you know of a hack that should be listed on the page, let us know by reaching out to us via Discord or leaving a comment below.
