  • PSA: Why Streamer “Going Live” Announcements Turn into Link Spam on Discord

    Discord Moderation Tips and Tricks

Note: the following reflects the personal opinion of clymax and not any other member of the FFV Central community or the community as a whole.

Excerpt of the self-promo channel of an undisclosed Discord server:

That’s right, we now have a link graveyard of a self-promo channel.

Not only do stream VODs largely get deleted by Twitch in a matter of weeks, but the stream links don’t even link to the VODs in question.

If you’re a creator of high-effort videos like the one in the next picture, would you bother posting in such a channel?

Spend months making and editing your video, and within a matter of hours, your video is lost in a sea of going-live announcements. Yay!

    Solutions for Discord Moderators

First, effort videos and stream plugs should never be in the same channel. Give each its own channel.

Second, in the channel for stream plugs, consider doing one of the following:

    • Only allow YouTube links in going-live announcements. YouTube livestreams double as the link to the eventual VOD. But this won’t work for Twitch-only streamers.
    • Require Twitch-only streamers to edit their going-live announcement with the Twitch VOD right after their stream ends. New problem: enforcement headache aside, this won’t work when most Twitch VODs expire.
    • Only let Twitch streamers plug their channel once. Basically, have a “stream channels” Discord channel, not a “streams” Discord channel.
    • Or, require them to delete all prior going-live plugs before posting a new one.

In addition, consider also limiting each streamer to a single plug per series. So if they are playing a long RPG that takes a hundred streams, they can only plug it once.

Finally, consider using a forum channel instead.

So, what do you think? What’s your Discord gripe? Comment below, or come check us out on Discord – where you won’t find such a link graveyard, of course.

  • Modders Who Host Their Mods on Discord

Versus Players Who Want Those Mods Without Joining Discord

For clymax’s projects, click here. You can also follow him on YouTube or Twitter.

The following exchange occurred in an older thread on the r/romhacking subreddit.

Let’s have a look at one of the replies first, which also summarizes the OP:

There is some real irony to you linking this out to a wordpress blog instead of just posting the discussion on reddit.

That said, I read it, and reading the words “r&t@rds,” “discuck” and “r&tardati0n” make it immediately clear you aren’t upset about anything real or relevant – like discords not being archived or easily backed up and not being a good replacement for forums or other types of more centralized repos but just your very weird distaste for discord. You then phrase it in a heavy iamthemaincharacter way when you state “It’s amazing how these mf do everything in their power to piss me off!” and honestly I think that’s enough of a summary of your bad take. You don’t even address it as a community problem – which it absolutely could be – but only as a personal slight to you. No one makes romhacks for you. No one who makes romhacks cares about you. And if anything, you being this obnoxious is only likely to make someone want to piss you off.

You are a vulgar twit with a worthless perspective and I’m glad these people piss you off, as you deserve to be pissed off.

Now for some excerpts from OP’s linked blog post (the highlighting is from the blog post):

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE R&T@RDS IN THE MODDING COMMUNITY THAT ONLY USE DISCORD AS THEIR ONLY SOURCE OF THEIR WORK

In the BHDN forum, there was a user by the name of “hikikomori” that was working on a romhack of pokemon red called “Plaguemon”.

I actually really enjoyed watching his progress, the dude has talent, not only he redesigned all the pokemons to make they look like some lovercraft creatures, he also implemented a lot of new features in the rthe game. But for some reason, hikikomori never posted back in bhdn, he didnt even posted his romhack in there. Actually, he didnt posted his romhack in any romhack site for what I know. So where did he uploaded his romhack then?

IN HIS FUCKING DISCORD SERVER OF COURSE!!!!!

It’s amazing how these mf do everything in their power to piss me off! Why can’t you guys just upload your hacks on some romhack site or make your own site like a normal person? I don’t want to join your discord server. I dont want to make part of your community. I dont want to read your retards takes. I dont want obey your stupids rules. I just want to play your mod until I get bored and move on to my day.

I shouldn’t be surprised at this point. This is the future of the romhacking/modding community.

“Join in your centralized honeypot server for the mediafire/mega/dropbox link of our mods.”

Well, I don’t know about you, but I gonna show those mf how to do a good work! I went in their discord server and grabbed all the mods shared in there and uploaded on archive.org.

The blogger apparently thinks grabbing Discord-hosted mods and reposting them on the web without mod-author permission is showing the modders how things should be done.

For some reason, the blogger didn’t even: try to actually show the modders how things should be done, by making his own mods and sharing them on the web and not on his Discord server.

Maybe it’s because in this day and age, by the time the blogger actually finished a mod, he wouldn’t want to put it on the web anymore. He’d also want his mod put on Discord instead.

It’s a case of the blogger seeing things from the player perspective but refusing to acknowledge that the perspective of the modder should matter. At all.

So, what’s the bigger problem for the hacking scene, if any? Modders who want players to join Discord? Players who want the mods without joining? Or preservation of the mod knowhow for the scene in general?
