New Retro Disassembly Tools for Ghidra

chipx86 is a software dev and game enthusiast who should probably dev less and play more. He is also the co-creator of the web-based collaborative code review tool, Review Board. Aside from Twitch, where he does coding and other streams, you can follow his work via his website, blog, Twitter/X, Github, or Buy Me a Coffee.

    Says chipx86:

This is a set of scripts I’ve developed initially to aid in my Faxanadu for NES disassembly work.

His work on Faxanadu has resulted in source code is fully byte-for-byte recompilable, and relocatable within each bank.

You can also find Retro Tinkertoys on our Tools page.

    Overview

The release includes the following Python 2.7 scripts for Ghidra:

    Data Scripts To:

    • Add a reference to each value in a selection with a given bank and offset.
    • Perform a search/replace of text in any label names referenced in a selection.
    • Update the types of data values without losing comments or references.

    NES Scripts To:

    • Export annotated assembly files and a hyperlinked HTML disassembly for NES 6502 code.
    • Select a 16 byte NES PPU tile data and generate a visualization in a comment.

    Romhack of Faxanadu (NES)

Xynosaur is a fan of retrogaming who is also a creator in demo/chip music. You can follow Xyno’s work via YouTube, Bandcamp, or Soundcloud.

The romhack is courtesy of Ascended Mermaid, whose work you can follow on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, or Github.

    Writes Xyno:

I know, I know…the game was made by Hudson Soft but it says Falcom on the title screen ! :O

Forget about Ys or Trails tonight…we gonna go back in time, when the only Falcom games that was released here was Ys on the Sega Master System and Dragon Slayer IV (named Legacy of the Wizard in US) !!

Playing on the Rest[o]ration romhack patch in which you get the original Japanese sprites, better translation, recovered the name system that was removed from the US version and NO MORE PASSWORDS !!! (Thank GOD !)

The hack publication can be found on RHDN here, or check out the Faxanadu Randomizer and Romhacking Discord here.

Part two of the Let’s Play follows.

    Respinner TBA

  • Faxanadu 40th Anniversary Edition Released

    Romhack of Faxanadu (NES)

You can follow songbirder’s projects via YouTube, Twitch, SRC, or Linktree.

A premiere livestream will be held by HungryGoriya on Saturday, May 23, at 7:30pm US Eastern time.

    Says hack author songbirder:

Faxanadu 40th Anniversary Edition is an update to this classic and unique Action RPG for the NES.

This romhack keeps what makes Faxanadu an amazing game while filling in gaps in the game world, fixing bugs, adding quality-of-life improvements, and just a few touch ups to the story and world of the World Tree. It is based on the western release.

2027 marks the 40th year since the game’s creation — we’re still in 2026, so there’s plenty of time for community feedback and adjustments. Eventually the source files from the tooling will be published so anyone wanting to fork the project into their own version can do so.

You can check out the hack website here or the Discord here.

The RHDN publication can be found here.
